I thought this was asked before, but I’ve been searching and can’t find anything – forgive me if it’s there and I’m just slow. I did see the temp tattoo thread.
What is Windstone’s stance on a tattoo design based on one of the Windstone dragons ? A friend of mine has been wanting a dragon tat forever but never found the right one. She just recently discovered Windstones, she says they’re perfect. I know the company doesn’t encourage fanart, does this include a design she draws for her own personal use, on her own body only ?
thanks
March 30, 2007 at 3:17 am #557025I have a tattoo of a dragon on my back that was from the original D&D Monster Manual, hehe. The Mist Dragon actually 😀 I don’t think there is anything “illegal” about fanart, but don’t quote me on how Windstone might feel about it.
I tattoo, and if they have a picture, I stick it. I’ve seen tons of looney tunes tattoos and other licensed stuff so I don’t see why not. I find stuff like that flattering to the person who created it. Like someone loved someone’s art or character so much they want it on their body for the rest of their life, but that’s just my personal feelings on it.
Got a busted Windstone?

They have a ban on fan art here for a reason, and they’re pretty strict about not letting people make copies of Windstone sculptures, cast or drawn.
Liscenced tatoos are just that, liscenced. Maybe the Windstones folks could come up with some kind of liscensing arrangement that would allow it, but otherwise I suspect it won’t be kosher.
But we’ll have to wait for John or Melody to weigh in on the subject to know for sure.

thanks We don’t allow tattooists to have our designs as stock images, but if anyone has a design of mine that they want to have a tattoo done of, just write me. reptangle at gmail dot com
I have always given permission. Tattoos are special. I have a tattoo design in my gallery that was based on a drawing I did on a letter.March 30, 2007 at 5:02 am #557028thank you Melody, I will let her know. She just saw one of the fledglings this weekend, and was totally blown away by your design and detail. She and another friend loved the dragon and may have been corrupted…I mean… encouraged to become collectors. 8)
The one who wants the tat is an artist, and I would really love to see what she would do with a PYO griffin. Maybe I should try to commission one ? hmmm
March 30, 2007 at 6:25 am #557029I’ve thought abut getting their little griffin lion logo and name tattooed small somewhere hee hee he I figure, Windstone owns my money and my heart, so why not? 😉 😉
March 30, 2007 at 1:29 pm #557030I’m the same way. As long as the tattoo artist agrees not to keep/reuse/or sell the design, I always give permission! It’s a special honor that someone would like my work well enough to get a tattoo. I think I have my firebird tattooed on about 8 people worldwide now… my griffins several times, and I’ve designed about 10 tattoos for folks on top of it. Tattoos are neat! 🙂
