Here’s another picture…August 13, 2008 at 9:28 pm #728021twindragonsmum wrote:Could it be a Gray Hawk? The Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Birds says this…
Description: 16-18″ Wing span upto 36″. Small hawk. Pale gray above with gray-white barring on underparts, white rump, and three wide conspicuous black bands on tail.
Voice: A clear downslurred whistle.
Habitat: Deciduous growth along stream beds that have sufficient open space for hunting.
Range: From southern Arizona and northern Mexico, as far aouth as Brazil and Argentina.
I don’t think it’s a Kite; Kite’s are 17″ high. Does it have a notched, blunt or rounded tail? What is the feather patterning like? Banded, spotted? Might also be a Prarie Falcon or a Sharp-shinned Hawk – they are 10-14″ high. Hope this helps?
Not a gray hawk… its tail is soil in color…
But thanks for all the info!!!!!!!! 😀 😀 😀
The Mississippi Kite is the closest that I can find in coloration and its migration… (it comes here to this area to breed)… I need to find my banoculars(sp?)… AGH!
Its funny, everytime I go outside to take pictures they look at me like “WHAT are you doing?” I just wish they didn’t have to perch so high in the trees…
August 13, 2008 at 9:47 pm #728022Hmmm…. soil colored tail – like ground pepper?
tdm
August 13, 2008 at 9:49 pm #728023I think it’s def in the kite family. Just going by the tail and the eyes.
Maybe the call you hear is the chit chat they use and the one on the website is a hunting call?August 13, 2008 at 9:50 pm #728024Just soiled dark gray… I need my banoculars!!!!!!! *crys*… I wanna see what color its eyes are…
all my close up pictures are SOOOOO dark… Maybe one day I’ll get some good lighted pictures…?
August 13, 2008 at 10:03 pm #728025maybe you could copy one pic and crop it and resize it (works for me, I am dead curious about this tweetie)
August 13, 2008 at 10:12 pm #728026Its because we are cloudy at the moment…

yeah all that moisture just teasing us… and making my head hurt..
August 13, 2008 at 10:31 pm #728028August 13, 2008 at 10:43 pm #728029I believe that it is indeed a Mississippi Kite. Birds can often have different calls, and they can vary by region.

I just need to see its eyes… all the pictures (the really good ones I can’t seem to take!) their eyes are red…
but the pictures I have seen of them in flight and perched in trees looks Just like these that are hanging around here. And they don’t show up until its Summer time.

I wouldn’t worry to much about the eyes. From looking at my field guide, the similar white tailed (black shouldered) kite also has red eyes. I was pretty frustrated too when I tried to identify these guys for the first time. They’re basically different shades of gray and hard to identify when perched.
August 13, 2008 at 11:15 pm #728033LOL, okay, I was ever so wrong. X) That happens. I don’t recall if I’ve ever seen a kite in real life, and I tend to know birds most that I uh, have seen in real life. XD
I’m actually a rather good birder. Really. 😳
August 13, 2008 at 11:15 pm #728034My vote is for Mississippi Kite. See how the primaries from the wings extend slightly past the tail? That’s a telltale sign. Very few raptors have that.
