Sorry if this has been brought up before, but it’s a question that’s been plaguing my mind.
Why always the Old Warrior? When you come out with special colors (Autumn Leaf, Copper Mauve, Silver, Flame, etc) they are always on the Old Warrior. Why do you use him all the time for special colors? Why not a Male or Scratcher? Is it just because you have the special Prototype? Or is it for another reason? Or is he just your favorite? π
(I love the OW. Too bad I can never afford him! :p)Thanks :3
October 17, 2007 at 1:02 am #627014I think it’s because they have tons of the prototype. Once they’ve all been used, then maybe we’ll see experimental colors on other sculpts.
Read my books! Volume 1 and 2 of A Dragon Medley are available now.

I can give you a reason why I think he is always used, besides the fact that they had prototypes….
He is, in my opinion, the archetypal, quintessential DRAGON ! He looks more like a real dragon than any other. He is BIG, Rough, Poised and seems to say…Screw with my horde and I will eat you!
I have 7 Old Warriors and to me they say so much. I am obviously in love with the sculpture. But when I think of Smaugh or one of the Pern Dragons (especially the older Bronze Males), he immediately fits the bill.
I wonder if this is Melody’s Favorite Dragon…but it is certainly mine π
October 17, 2007 at 5:18 am #627017The Old Warrior is Melody’s favorite sculpt, if I remember right. Also, they had about 300 prototypes that they wanted to use, so they wouldn’t be sitting around. Those are getting close to gone now with all the LE series, though.
October 17, 2007 at 1:40 pm #627018If it is her favorite, I can see why! It is truely amazing!!! She does SO WELL! I can’t wait to own one one of these days!!! π

I thought her favorite was the scratcher.
The reason its the OW is because its a prototype, so they are testing colors on them. Putting test colors on production dragons does not make as much sense as putting test colors on test dragons, so to speak. π
October 17, 2007 at 2:11 pm #627020Was it the scratcher? Then the OW is a good test paint platform because of the pose and size, I’m guessing.

I thought so, but I could be wrong.
As for the OWs, I remember the auctions saying that they didnt know what to do with the prototypes till they thought of trying test colors and putting them on Ebay so that the rest of us could go broke. π
October 17, 2007 at 2:16 pm #627022That’s a good a reason as any! π
October 17, 2007 at 6:02 pm #627023Another reason (I think I remember her saying) is that he’s a perfect canvass for test colors – he shows off a paint job better than most other dragons! Which can be a problem when things like Autumn Leaf look so good on him but on none of the other dragons! π
He’s definitely my favorite dragon sculpt, too. He’s AMAZING…
I was just thinking last night how interesting special laps would be – I wonder how they would show off a test paint job? Though they probably wouldn’t go for much cheaper!

-J R R TolkienOctober 17, 2007 at 6:24 pm #627024I may have to duck and run for saying this but I like the lap and scratcher better than the ow and would loooove to see them in some of these awesome colors. π π

(I love the OW. Too bad I can never afford him! :p)Thanks :3When we first made the Old Warriors we cast hundreds of them, then discovered that the castings had cracked where the wing touches the neck, so I had to change the sculpture. We destroyed all of the cracked castings, but found we had already finished several hundred! These (they did not have cracks) are the prototypes. We didn’t know what to do with them all, and didn’t want to destroy them! So, I have been repainting these finished Emerald and Peacock guys and making new, limited edition colors which may become production colors. It is a great way to test new colors, and see if people like them or not. The Warrior is my favorite as well, and also is the one who looks best in any color.
