I don’t have a whole lot of information accept that they are rare, NOT albino’s, and have been appearing in West Michigan (where i am from)over the past 20 or so years.

Oooo! Very cool! When we lived in Soda Springs, ID we’d get “mulies” in the backyard eating the apples right off our trees. Me boyohs went out the door to school one snowy morning and startled a whole herd of ‘ em that had camped out on the front pourch for the night…

Awsome! I’ve only ever seen three mulies, but i saw a black tail one day. They are so scarce some people think they are extint. I’ve also seen two mountain lions, one across a feild and one fifteen feet from me when i was camping in a tent

In Maryland we also see more ‘Piebald’ and White deer, but there have been one or two actual ‘Albinos’ with pink eyes seen on our Eastern Shore.

I’ve personally seen one of the ‘Piebalds’ which are mostly a mixture of almost all white with tan spotting along the back to the tail, around the shoulders, neck and head … more like a tan/brown/white Tobiano Paint horse. They’re very pretty.

How cool! I wonder if they have been migrating from Illinois? When I was a teenager (long ago), we used to drive out to Argonne National Laboratory (where they did all the nuclear experimentation during the 50’s) to view the white deer that were roaming the forests there. The rumor was that they were deformed from radiation, but I found a fact sheet on how they came about living in Illinois.

“Visitors to Argonne National Laboratory-East are
sometimes startled by the white deer roaming the site
and occasionally speculate on the nature of the
experiment that produced their unusual coloring.
But the deer are perfectly normal fallow deer (Dama
dama), a naturally light-colored species native to North
Africa, Europe and parts of Asia. There are about 40 on
                the Argonne site.

Today’s herd began with eight or nine white deer that
Gustav Freund, inventor of β€œskinless” casings for hot
dogs, received or purchased from Chicago clothier
Maurice L. Rothschild. This small herd roamed Freund’s
country estate, part of the land that is now Argonne, and
                grew to 38 deer.

A heavy snowstorm in the late 1930s forced the deer to
forage in the estate’s fruit orchard. The Freunds
preferred fresh fruit to the deer, so many were given
away to parks and zoos. Those that remained were
destroyed by the local game warden. All, that is, except
two does. One gave birth to a buck, and the herd began
                to grow in number again.

Born a creamy tan with white spots, the deer become
white after reaching their first year.”

Here on the Western Shore [of the Chesapeake Bay] white-tail deer were re-introduced in the 1950s. I don’t recall where the stock came from, but we also have had occasional piebald deer and very rare all-white ones. The last all-white deer in my area was about 10 or 15 years ago and disappeared while still a fawn. πŸ™

Yes, I’ve seen pictures from friends who live in Western Maryland where some were sighted either in the Garrett, Washington, and Allegeny counties. Do you also live in Maryland or in Virginia, etruscan? If so, I’m a neighbor living in the Severn/Millersville area – just south of Baltimore! πŸ™‚
