So you said that you live out in the middle of nowhere… how do you like that? Is it by choice, or convenience? Maybe to keep the kiddos safe? Or something else? What kind of pets do you have and how long have you had them? Do you have neighbors close by?
Whats the newest addition to your Windstone collection? What are you hoping for next?
March 18, 2009 at 3:11 am #756975Hi ski! Those are great questions – made me think a bit! So, let’s see – to be completely honest the idea of moving here caused me to have some major tantrums… Mostly it was because it’s sooooo isolated in Soda Springs! It was very hard to think that the nearest craft store, fabric store, in fact just about any store was a little over an hour away. But it has turned out to be wonderful in terms of the people here and the fact that it only takes 5 minutes to get to our favorite fishing spot and we don’t have to “share” it with anyone else. Camping is the same way 5-10 minutes from home… Did we move here by choice? I guess we did. Rod (hubby) was laid off from work in Salt Lake City, Utah and the job hunt led us here 😀 It is such a laid back community! When you drive down the street or are out walking, everyone waves to each other! We all look out for each other’s families. The smaller schools and class sizes have been wonderful; the fact that we only have 3 stop lights in “town” was mind boggling at first and rush hour? What’s that? 😀 The boys definately get let off the chain much more easily… We have given them much more freedom to just wander and explore and be out. Our neighbors are all very generous with their time and friendship. The boys are invited along with the other families constantly and they’ve been taught to ski – cross country and downhill, ice skate at the outdoor rink and go icefishing. The boys are learning to play the piano and are being taught by a former performer at no cost to us, simply because the gentleman teaching them says they have talent. That would never happen where we were living before… It IS hard to travel in winter; we are in a fairly secluded valley and the mountain passes in snow can be quite the “adventure” 😮 A lot of the time we have to be prepared for staying put at home, which means we need to have enough food and water on hand for a few days and have an alternative heat source for when/if the power goes out. This is the coldest place I’ve ever lived – the schools only close when the temps. hit -20 F 😮 Last year the boys had 10 “snow days” not because of snow but because of the cold!
We have 2 cats, Loki and Pixel, who belong to the boys. They (the cats) are excellent hunters. The rodent population has been greatly diminished and they love to bring home “presents” for all of us; from snakes to birds to various sorts of rodentia. This winter they’ve brought home quite a few ermine. Not enough to make a coat but possibly enough to make a nice scarf… 😮 Our next door neighbors are an acre or so on either side of us but as they are “snow birds” they only live here during the summer. We have a very high elderly population in Soda Springs… Everyone here were so excited and welcoming when we moved in because of the boys… It’s a nice little place but sadly the population is dwindling because of the lack of “young” families here. All those gran’mas and grandpa’s absolutely spoil Sean and Ethan. We get so many compliments for them about how polite they are and caring- what nice manners they have and they are sooo helpful… We have to make certain the boys heads don’t get swollen from all the praise…
The newest addition to our Windstone menagerie actually belongs to the boys, courtesy of laphon 😀 They are the proud joint owners of a wolfie griffy chickie which is totally adorable! They would love to be able to add one of Arlas’ beautiful griffy chicks to the flock (pride?) but I keep telling them to learn to enjoy and appreciate what we already have and just have fun watching the ebay auctions and seeing where they get to go for new homes 😀 The newest piece for my collection is an old brown, stripey male griffin. The poor male griffies are being run ragged by the chickies and are looking for a mate or two to come help raise their rascals 😀

March 19, 2009 at 2:42 am #756976Thats really cool. I spent my senior year in a town in Minnesota… population 198. It sounds very similar. We sure didnt have to worry about crime much and everyone was super friendly. I even learned to milk a cow while I was there! I kinda miss the small town life. Do you at least have a little family grocery nearby? We had a gas station w/2 pumps, a small convenience store, churches, and a couple bars. No stop lights, but we did have several stop signs. Are the kids learning to snow board at all?
March 19, 2009 at 7:28 pm #756977Yes, we do have a grocery store, two gas stations, a florist, a pharmacy, Ace hardware and a Family Dollar. Since we are the county seat we also have the county jail which is hardly ever occupied. We also have Caribou Memorial Hospital which is state of the art – sorta suprising – and we’re also the home base for the Life Flight helicopters. There are lots of churches; Baptist, Catholic, Presbyterian, Seventh Day Adventist and Latter-Day Saints. At Christmas and Easter all the congregations form one huge choir and orchestra and perform for the community. It’s quite spectacular!
The boys haven’t tried snowboarding yet. They seem to be more interested in skiing at the moment. We do have lots of community oriented winter sports. I think that’s because winter is soooo long and cold. We also have a little one screen movie theatre and on Saturdays they show a free matinee. You can do lunch and a movie-all at no cost-the bar provides pizza and soft drinks. It’s a great place for friends to get together and escape the cold and snow. I really am amazed at how generous the people are with their time and how the businesses go out of their way to provide things for the community to do. I think it’s helped to make Soda Springs a very tight knit, strong, friendly community. We really do love it here! If you have a chance, come visit sometime… As they say in Soda, “Come to God’s Country and escape the world for a while!” 😀
