Would you rather have a present or a gift certificate?
July 17, 2008 at 7:26 pm #496191July 17, 2008 at 9:18 pm #723524If I do get a gift from people, I prefer a gift. Especially if I don’t know what it is. Then it’s better (although I appear horribly impatient at times). 😀
July 17, 2008 at 9:21 pm #723525It depends. If it’s from someone who knows me than I prefer a gift. I would like to think that they would know me well enough that they know what I like. A gift card seems really impersonal. Unless it’s to a book store, then I’m totally good. 😆
But if it’s someone who doesn’t know me very well then a gift card is fine.
July 17, 2008 at 9:47 pm #723526I can’t really answer this one- it really depends. From close friends, and immediate family, I prefer gifts, because their judgment of what I like is generally pretty good.
For my extended family… aunts, etc, I’d rather get gift cards. They are forever giving me clothes I would never wear, complete with lace and sequins and in bright colors. I am a very down to earth person when it comes to clothes- comfy and earth tones are a fast way to please me. They have been doing this since I was little… you’d think they’d realize that I don’t want a hot pink shirt with lace on it after 20 years of seeing what I like to wear. >_<

July 17, 2008 at 10:11 pm #723528I’m a gift person myself. I like to be surprised with things and you never know what someone might think you’ll like 😯 . Granted I’ve recieved some really strange things, (mostly from my mom 🙄 ) but they’re still fun. 😉
July 17, 2008 at 10:49 pm #723529I mostly like gift certificates, but gifts from people who know what I like are nice too. Too often times I get big candle contraptions that the cats destroy in one day, so I’d rather have a gift card than that.
July 17, 2008 at 10:53 pm #723530I voted gift certificate.
I am really bad at being asked what I want and not having a clue. And if I have no idea what would make me happy, you can be sure a random gift is only going to be good because “it’s the thought that counts”.
The best present I’ve had in a long time was a “gift certificate” to Goodwill from my daughter, last Christmas. She made it herself out of folded paper stuffed with $15 in bills and labeled “Official Goodwill Industries Gift Certificate (not really!)”.
Last week she finally got around to taking me out to the local Goodwill store to use my certificate. She spent lots of money on clothes and furniture, and I bought a stack of $1.99 USB replacement keyboards, a CD rack, and 20 science fiction books. I had change left.
(I was really hoping to find a pair of women’s bright red trousers, but they didn’t have any that fitted me. Men’s trousers are so boring. Oh well.)
Anyway, we had a great time. And it was WAY better than a box of candy or a random DVD.
July 17, 2008 at 10:53 pm #723531I suppose there’s somethings that I would have rather not had. Like the jewelry box from my grandmother. I lived with the woman for a year, and she still hasn’t figured out that I don’t like stuff like that? Especially since it’s pink and ceramic and has flowers on it.
Since no one knows my size, they gave up on giving me clothing. *whew*
I suppose some people I would prefer the gift from, since they know what I like. Dragons and Windstones in general, as well as a Coles gift certificate, would be good ways to please me 🙂
July 18, 2008 at 2:32 am #723532I voted gift certificate. I’m such a stickler about what people can and can’t buy for me that it’s easier all the way around for a gift certificate to a store I frequent. The thought of a gift is appreciated, but the last gift I got I had already bought for myself! 😆 Hence why gift certificates work best for me. 😉
July 18, 2008 at 2:36 am #723533I like gifts. It’s just hard for people who don’t know me as to what I like and/or don’t have.
Windstones, Swarovski(TM), among a few other things, are always safe bets (then just need to figure out what I have/don’t have).
Gift cards are fun for music, books or anime.
Anything else is general odd or obscure/random stuff.
July 18, 2008 at 5:02 am #723534I prefer gifts, I think that it is the thought that counts though.
July 18, 2008 at 5:07 am #723535What Jennifer said. Except in the case of gifts from overseas, no matter from whom. You generally don’t have to pay shipping for a gift cert… 😆
July 18, 2008 at 11:02 am #723536I thnk gifts are MUCH more personal than just a gift certificate. I will not usually let something go if it’s a gift even if it’s not my style it was picked out with love and that can NEVER be replaced
