As you guys know we just got my 4Runner back on the road.
Today, as hubby is talking to me on the phone on the way home from work, his transmission decides to take a vacation, yep…it’s dead. And there is no way we’ve got $1500 to replace it, a used one is around $400, but they are hard to find, and I don’t have that either.
So now we’re back down to the 79 Toyota and my 4Runner…the 79 is not the ideal vehicle for snow, it’s a longbed, and is only 2WD, has good tires, but that’s it.
So we’ve decided to just wait until the taxes get done, and get a new 4X4 truck, which by then we should be able to manage, and just hope Kris can manage to drive the 79 safely until then. We may have to load its bed down with some gravel from the gravel pile to help with traction.
But we sooo didn’t need this now!

January 13, 2008 at 12:53 am #655833Sorry to hear this Kyrin…if only we did not have to rely on vehicles so much… 🙁
January 13, 2008 at 1:26 am #655834I’m so sorry to hear this especially on top of everything else you are going thru. I guess selling the Sun Emperor was in the cards!
January 13, 2008 at 1:34 am #655835Ewwww! Replacing a transmission is no fun at all! We had to do that in my husband’s Honda Passport this time last year. That bill was $3,100. We still need to pay my parents back for it. Lucky for me they aren’t charging us interest. 😆 Seriously though good luck getting it replaced and I hope you’ve used up all your bad “Car”-ma for the year. Sorry, I couldn’t resist the pun!

January 13, 2008 at 2:31 am #655837That kind of crap is what got us a 06 Ford Fusion. My husband had a 89 Ford F150 and we dumped a lot of parts into it (a lot of money too) because the person who had it before us didn’t understand Maintance on a truck… after that it freakin broke down AGAIN… so he said $@$(%( and we traded it in on the Fusion. We have a car payment now BUT at least it RUNS! 😀
Car probelms stink! I hope that all does work its way out for y’all!!!
January 13, 2008 at 2:34 am #655838That really sucks! And yeah, a transmission job is a pain. I know, my husband likes to regularly take his out and tinkle with it. Guess who gets to go underneath the car to help him?
Read my books! Volume 1 and 2 of A Dragon Medley are available now.

January 13, 2008 at 11:14 am #655840Sends good thoughts your way….
January 13, 2008 at 12:36 pm #655841Thanks…yeah, everything is going wrong all at once…and it all costs lots of money. I don’t know what to do, thank God we just refinanced, otherwise we’d be in a huge world of hurt, but come Feb 1st, if this stuff hasn’t improved, we’re not going to be doing great either.
I am grateful for tax returns, but we won’t have that until the end of Feb. We just have to hang in there, but why does this kind of thing always happen at the worst possible time? If this happened in spring, it wouldn’t be as bad, since snow and ice would not be an issue making resorting to driving the 79 a risky business. It is so old and rickity that driving it in snow and ice is really scary.
Husband was talking about making me drive it, but when I pointed out that we can’t get out of the driveway at work when it snows without 4WD, he realized he would have to be the one to drive it. Because last week 10 people had to abandon their cars at work and have family come pick them up, cause their cars couldn’t make it up the hill on the ice. Mine did, but only because it is 4WD.
The ’79 would never make it, and with me driving it, there is no other cars for our roommate to come get me in, so I’d be stranded at work, and unlike my husband, I can’t live there, he has a place to stay up at his work, and he lives up there most of the week already, so I informed him, he gets the 79, since he can live at work.
He doesn’t like it, but really, let’s be reasonable. Also he is the better driver, better at handling the snow and ice, I;m terrifed the whole time I’m driving in it, without 4WD in an old truck, I am sure I’d end up wrecking. He thought about that too and realized he was the only one who could handle the 79 safely, I am just not good enough at winter driving to handle a 2WD vehicle.
Anyway, this whole situation isn’t fun, but we’ll be okay, at least we do have another vehicle here, even if it isn’t the best.

January 13, 2008 at 12:54 pm #655842Sorry about your car Kirin. I am sure you know this already, living around snow, but in case you dont, cinder blocks or other weight in the back of the 2WD will make it handle better on the icy roads.
January 13, 2008 at 5:13 pm #655843I’m sorry to hear about your car troubles. Cars are great except when they aren’t working. Then they are a real pain in the…
When I was driving a car that wasn’t good in the snow I used to use cat litter to weigh it down. That way if I got stuck I could use the litter under the wheels to improve traction.
Can you do direct deposit for your taxes? You get your money faster that way.

We have gravel from the driveway earlier this year, and we still have a huge pile, so hubby will more than likely toss some into the truck with the bulldozer. It’s definately a good idea.

January 13, 2008 at 9:27 pm #655845Sorry about your car – when those things go bad it can be very expensive. I know when something expensive goes wrong for me two or three more expensive things go along with it.
