Since Bingo was put down, Bianca has been very depressed. My sister has tried everything. (At least that’s what she says.) Bianca has stopped eating and drinking. She was eating a few bites of chicken. But, that was it. It’s been a week and a half….
Has anyone dealt with a depressed dog before? Anything you’d recommend?
August 16, 2008 at 3:23 pm #728244Get another dog? (seriously, in some cases, that’s the best solution)
Are they taking her outside and doing things with her? Playing games at home? Trying to renew her interest in things? Has the vet recommended anything at all? Have they had her in for a physical or diagnostics to make sure it’s just depression?
They could try getting her involved in a training class, or a sport like agility to give her something else to focus on. It doesn’t have to be a serious thing, but maybe just a get together where she has a job to do a couple times a week to get her spirits back up.
August 16, 2008 at 3:36 pm #728245After we put Pooka to sleep, our other dog, Cannelle, was down, even though they never played together. After a few days, she got used to being alone… We got her a new bed/cushion for the dining room and got rid of Pooka’s, so with the smell gone, I guess she forgot about her.
Now she’s fine, queen of the house!
Read my books! Volume 1 and 2 of A Dragon Medley are available now.

August 16, 2008 at 4:18 pm #728247I’m voting for getting a puppy. Nothing sparks a dog up like a puppy. If you go to SPCA or a rescue, you can let the dog pick the puppy. 🙂

We tried that with our third dog and it actually hastened her demise. She died within two weeks of the new dog. I think that getting another dog depends on the dog themselves. Our current dog lost her companion and she’s doing fine. We decided not to get her a puppy so she wouldn’t have to compete for attention and it worked out great. If it is severe depression, getting another dog may not cure it; our other dog died of it (and the puppy, unfortunately). I think Phoenix has a good idea though: if you take the dog to the SPCA with you, she can pick the dog. We never tried that.
August 16, 2008 at 7:50 pm #728249I think ddvm’s advice should be followed..she’s the resident vet here…literally, she is a vet.
After you’ve ruled out medical possibilities, then you can go from there.

August 16, 2008 at 8:34 pm #728250She’s been to the vet. Yes, she’s been getting her normal walks, and she seems to be playing. She just is down and not eating.
They went to Woodstock yesterday to pick up the ashes, and Bianca was excited. She was acting normal. She bounded up to the vet clinic and when she couldn’t find Bingo then she got depressed again. It’s sad really. Even though he was neutered and she was mean to him she saw him as her mate.
She’ll be okay, I’m sure. It’s just depressing to see her like that.August 16, 2008 at 9:14 pm #728251😳 I forgot to add that Bianca was a rescue. She’s horrible with other dogs since she was never around them when she was younger. So, sadly getting her into agility or anything that requires another dog, wouldn’t be in her best interest.
Strangely enough, she’s best around other dogs off leash. On leash, she will go to attack every time. Her last head collar was a halti, it was an effective muzzle at times….
August 16, 2008 at 9:20 pm #728252Sounds like she will recover…I would go through the house and wash all bedding that Bingo shared and perhaps clean the carpets or at least use a carpet freshener thing to help clear out his smell from the environment. Not smelling him should help a bit. Dogs are very smell oriented.
Touching that she was looking for Bingo at the vets…poor girl. Just try to keep encouraging her to eat and playing with her, she’ll come out of it soon, I’m sure.

Our dog is a rescue and has issues with other dogs, but our humane society has class for dogs like that and our dog has been doing agility class through them. Maybe you can check with your humnae society and see if they offer something similar?
