If it has a white mouth it is a cotton mouth, don’t go near it poisonous. The head kinda looks like a viper, can’t get a good look. Maybe

Hard to judge by the photo but it looks like a northern watersnake.

I don’t like the looks of that head!

I agree. The head makes it look suspicious (hard to tell at the angle for sure), but suspect it’s a cottonmouth.

It looks like a water mocassin but there’s also harmless water snakes that look very similar.

Here’s a link to a website that tells how to identify the difference by looking at certain features, however I wouldn’t get too close to it to check it out.

I think it looks more like a watersnake than a cottonmouth (head looks more slender), but like others have said its hard to tell from the picture. What state do you live in, and what part of the state? If you live in a state where there are no cottonouths, then its probably a watersnake.

it does resemble a cottonmouth, or maybe a copperhead, at least to me >.> scary!

I don’t like the looks of him, either, and would definitely stay back. 🙁 How in the world are you keeping the dogs away? Mine doesn’t have that much discipline (my fault, I know)!

Tell Jeff you need to MOVE when poisonous snakes invade. Tell him it is a sign of the coming apocalypse…… floods, snakes…..you have to get out– now!! 😀

Wow, I love most snakes but that is one UGLY snake whatever it is. That head is not pretty!

The fat thick body, narrowing tail, & box-like head around tiny neck appear to match a Water Mocassin, which are dangerous.

Do you have “critter removal” services in your area that you could call for removal? Many of them simply remove the animal & place it in another locale instead of harming them.

I had raccoons nest in my soffit last year & had to use “critter removal” services extensively because as they trapped one mother raccoon and removed her, another moved into the nest. Finally, last one had babies & they had to tear up my walls to try to extricate them after catching the mother.

I think it’s super cool! I’m not a particularly huge snake fan like some people, and don’t really have the desire to hold or own them, but I think they look awesome.
But as others have said, definitely best to stay away and keep pets away.
What ended up happening with it? Did he just slink along on his way?
