I am learning to air brush, and I finally got control down yesterday. I have no problem with opaques or transparent, but as soon as I put a pearl or iridescent in it starts sputting, and skipping, like I am losing air or it is clogged, but it isn’t. I have turned to pressure up, turned it downed, thinned the paint over and over again, used the large needle. Any help here? Is the irridensence in the paint too thick? I have it thinned with airbrush medium down to water thin. even tried water.
Oh, I have a badger crescendo and createx colors paint.

Metallic paints rely on very tiny metal flakes suspended in the paint, and the needle of an airbrush often has trouble with these little flakes building up or being just too large to easily pass through without spitting. Same thing for iridescent paints as they usually use mica flakes to do the same thing. Anything color shifting, pearl, metallic, interference, or iridescent will have these sort of flakes in it. The size of the flakes varies from color/mineral/brand to brand etc, so it’s hard to guess how well any given paint will work until you use it.
I don’t know how to overcome this problem as generally “opening” up the flow and regularly purging/cleaning mine will solve it. Again I do hope someone can help you with your specific brand!

I don’t know. 🙁 I wonder if anyone else here has had experience with them?

My art: featherdust.comMay 14, 2014 at 9:18 pm #912651We have a few Iwata airbrushes that are the small button type, as well as a regular Badger airbrush… I couldn’t get them to work with our paints. They are intended for use with very fine pigments (like Badger airbrush paint) and stains. I suspect that the fluid nozzle is too small to pass larger pigment grains. Badger has a line of airbrush paint that is intended for use with your brand and size of airbrush. http://www.badgerairbrush.com/woodsandwater.asp
May 14, 2014 at 10:26 pm #912660That’s really wierd then..the createx airbush colors line is supposedly used for painting t shirts and stuff with a normal airbrush. What is the point if you have to use a spray gun..I’ll have to keep fussing then..that just does not make sense to me.
see…? http://www.createxcolors.com/airbrushcolors.htmlThat is the regular sized tip, I even tried the bigger one. When I looked at the paint, the “glittery sunstance” seem chunked together, so I put thinner in it, mixed it real well and let it sit over night..I might try again later….so confused…
quote “Createx Airbrush Colors work best out of the bottle with a 0.5mm tip-sized airbrush operated @ 40 – 50 PSI” 0.5 mm is the middle sized “normal” tip. more fussing i guess

But unfortunately, I find iridescent and metallic paints to be very finicky (as Nam stated, due to particle size), no matter the brand, and Createx themselves to be especially hard to work with. They were cheap and easily available, and that’s why I used them, but they aren’t necessarily “easy” to work with.
If I remember correctly, I’ve always found it necessary to dilute Createx paints with airbrush medium or extender, even if it says ready to use out of the bottle. If you dilute it, the mix needs to be shook well right before using, otherwise the paint and medium with separate, and your siphon tube will just be picking up the heaviest particles from the bottom.
When individuals would ask for my advice when they first started out airbrushing, I’d always recommend not using any metallic or iridescent paint, to learn and get good with regular paint first. Then “battle” the others later. Not fun advice to anyone who wants to work with the sparkly paint right away.
May 15, 2014 at 1:37 am #912671well, I got the rest figured out..and pearl ex is better but not great…so lost..I’ll have to figure it out. Thanks for the tips, I did notice that leaving it to sit over night seemed to loosen it up more so it will take some figuring I guess. I may just end up do this commission by hand, but I am pretty sure I could still match it by hand. Just a lot mor difficultly. Does any one have experience using golden brand with the fluid extendor? Just playing around with ideas and figuring particle sizes…wondered how interference goldens would size up…hmmmm

I had bottle each of createx irridecent, pearl and wicked irr. , Badger spectra-tex (i think) mettalic and a little bottle of Schmincke mettalic medium all in purple. I had the same issue with all but one. So here are me results for those interested:
Basic info: I have a badger cresendo and I used the size large tip (0.07 mm I think) Note that my little compressor cannot top 50-55 psi, thus a portion of my conflict.
Createx Colors Irr.: Was definitely the worst along side the pearl. Immediately clogged the tip even with my biggest tip size at maximum pressure. Sputters all over the place. To get any to really come out you had to pull the trigger most of the way. Thinning helped but barely, even with it sitting over night.
Createx Colors Pearl: See Above.
Createx Wicked Colors Irr.: A bit thinner, but barely. Still clogs just as much if not a minuscule amount less.
Bader spectra-tex Irr. : Another fraction better, but again still not very good at all.
Createx Transparent violet with 1/8 met medium: Awesome, almost solves my problems, at least 95% better. For reference of others having this issue, I highly recommend the medium to those who want to try. It is roughly 15- 17 dollars for a 28 ml bottle, but so worth it i think!
and a very washed out picture of what i was practicing on
