I just buy what I like when I see it. But I am collecting the griffins and flap cats. I also want all the Jade dragons. And when I buy something else, I try to fit it into these groups:
Royal Hatchers in Peacock (have)
Original Family in Rainbow (have)
One of each color for Orientals (have)
Emerald Rising Spectral (have) and Red-something sitting Spectral (need) to match my Nene Thomas print
Gold Emperor (have) and OW (need, but can get)
Black Gold Scratcher, Lap, and Fledgling (need, but can get)
I’m also trying for all the coileds, coiled moms, and curlies. (I have a lot already)
I would also like to have all the White Wizards (it’s a Gandalf thing) to go with my LOTR collection of stuff
Plus the Gothic Unicorn and the KirinsSo, I guess the point is that I buy what I want when I see it, but it should fit into this plan somehow.
September 28, 2007 at 4:18 pm #621511I buy the em-peas, emeralds, and peacocks for my living room and I buy the golds and whites for my bedroom. I try and look for anything retired first (that is if I have a must have ich and just need to buy something) but if I can’t find a retired that I need I go for something that is not retired and easy to get. I pretty much buy what I like and hored all of my Windstones! 😈
September 28, 2007 at 4:30 pm #621512Due to money and space restraints I only buy what I like and in a sculp I like.
Having said this, my opinions have changed greatly since joining the forum. I didn’t use to like the Laps, Kir-ins, Scratchers, Spectrals, or Wizards before joining the forum. When I see others display their collections and explain why they like certain sculps or colors I begin to appreciate them in a new light. This forum is a terrible influence for the wallet. 😆
I usually don’t buy entire families and if I do get multiple pieces in the same color I don’t go after every piece ever offered. I like doing it that way so there is more variety in my collection. I have also found that having too many pieces *start throwing rotten vegetables now* can distract from fully enjoying just a few pieces. So I’m becoming more picky about what I get. I usually prefer to LE or LP items over regular production if the prices are comparable, but sometimes they are just too expensive.
September 28, 2007 at 5:31 pm #621513I voted for buying a piece when I see something I like. But I probably fit into a couple of those.

Makes perfect sense to me, since that’s what I do too! It was more apparent when I was only buying one piece of each sculpt. (Except white… to be honest, because there was too much white in my curio with all the white unicorns & the dragon eggs, I only ever bought the white fledgie (before curls were released), so I have no big white dragons.)
When more colors were released, I had to start doubling up on the pieces to keep the color representation. I still only buy the color that looks best though, and spread around the love a little. 😀So far, Black Gold is the only production color that I’ve LOVED on every piece. If only I could have all of ’em….
But I collect all the fledgies and curlies though, because they’re too cute not to. And I’ll get all the griffins too, minus a few LE ones (I don’t have an albino, and my wolf family will be mixed Prod & LE once completed).
I already could fill at least half of a 2nd big curio, and eventually will get a 3rd just for non-dragon pieces. Will have to plan for that when buying a house when I come back to the States…. 😕

*nods* Me, too. Seeing everyones’ collections has helped mine “branch out”, too. The biggest dragon I owned pre-Forum was a male, now I have an Emp, two OWs, etc. and an empty wallet… 😆
September 28, 2007 at 6:32 pm #621515My favorite is the Emperor (7) Fledgling ((13) Emperor and Empress Hatching (3 sets) and the curlies (11) but after joining the forum my interests have greatly expanded until I currently own a total of 38 other Windstones that are a mixture.
I might add that last week I got my first OW a brown one and have ordered the white one and the OW could just become my new favorite
September 28, 2007 at 7:25 pm #621516My method on the dragons is: only one of each sculpt (except the curlies and poads, as they obviously do not count) and only a few sculpts in any one color. I have a bright spectrum of dragon hues 8)
As far as non-draconian sculpts go I just buy what I like. Though I do plan to get all the family sculpts eventually, the unis and griffs and the pegasus clan.
September 28, 2007 at 7:25 pm #621517I like to have lots of different colours 😀

I’m EXACTLY the same way! I am teaching myself to only buy the pieces that I absolutely LOVE and MUST have, instead of just liking them… this way I don’t blow as much money, and I’ll have enough space to display them all. LP and LE pieces are special, so I tend to go for those over RP. I love my Gold Emperor though… and is probably the only RP piece I’ll own until a new color comes out that I like on a certain sculpt.
No rotten vegetables being flung from my direction! 😛
September 28, 2007 at 8:23 pm #621519I started with just collecting the Peacock Dragons when I was a poor student. Now, if I see it and like it and can afford it and shipping and customs isn’t going to kill me, I buy it 😀

That makes perfect sense to me and was well explained. I would understand this to be a vote for “I have my own method of madness,” choice – unless you went with the “I get what I like when I see it.” But, since you explained yourself so well, I would choose the prior (own method of madness).
Maebnus- I am not throwing anything at you. I’ll admit Im am definitely not a white color lover, though I use to have a white mother dragon (and am trying to unload a new young white). I never understood why they are SO sought after and tend to be more than the other colors. Seems to me that theres a lot more work that goes into shading and striping involved with colors. But that my opinion. Whoever loves whites, more power to ya!
September 29, 2007 at 4:42 am #621521I just started collecting, and I don’t have/can’t currently get a job, so really I’m just trying to get my absolute favorites. I plan on having no more than one of each sculpt, and a different color for each dragon I get. Really the only ‘set’ I plan on getting is the wolf griffin family (and possibly the kirins if I can find/afford them).
September 29, 2007 at 5:37 am #621522I voted I see something I like and add it to my collection because that’s how it all started.
I’d love to own an entire collection(*dreams of several complete collections*)
in a single color, and am working towards it now. I have whites (which was probably a poor color choice to start with) but it’s the color of my first dragon bought 🙂
September 29, 2007 at 6:01 am #621523Hey, welcome, Leigha! A lot of people collect the whites – it’s not a poor choice.
September 29, 2007 at 6:32 am #621524Thanks for the welcome.
I do love my whites. Beautiful Beautiful.
I got a few of them cheap because they’re chipped and scratched and what not 🙁 but I plan on getting them restored at some point in life.
