Did I even spell that right? What happened to the days when ferrets were exotics? 😆

-J R R TolkienJanuary 18, 2007 at 11:29 pm #529361I HAVE DEGUS! They are kind of like a desert chinchilla. They look so small on that webpage Nam listed though. Like a gerbil. Mine are still babies, but they’re bigger then that. The pics are from when I first got them. There is a more recent pic in my griffin gallery with one of my brown griffin. LOL!

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h196/drag0nfeathers/MySpaceTweaks/DeguSlide2.jpg=P Arlla, I had chinchillas for a long time actually. Yea, the Degu is basically the poor man’s chinchilla, but Degus have more personality I think. Well, at least mine do =) It’s still just as much fun watching them in their dust bath!
Mine should hopefully be having babies soon 😀

They are lots of fun to watch, especially in their dust bath. Both of them are rescues – Charlie I got from an actual rescue and Frederick used to belong to Janet Evanovich’s (she writes the Stephanie Plum books) cousin. She ended up not having time or money for Frederick so that’s how I got him. Too bad she and her cousin are not talking to each other – I love the Stephanie Plum series. Haven’t gotten any degus yet but they are really cute.

Then I think you should get one. They are great pets. But they do live up to 15 years so it’s a long term commentment. And they chew – they also chewed the lighter in my stove! But they are soooo cute and soft – I don’t see how anyone could kill them to wear their fur. 👿

I know someone who just got one, and I am SO JEALOUS! I’ve wanted a chinchilla for a zillion years, but they’re so expensive and I hear they’re hard to care for. And annoying with all the chewing.
As soon as we move and I have my own room, I intend to get one! I’ve been begging for years!

Once you move and can get one you might want to do a search to see if there is a rescue in the area – they tend to be a lot cheaper. Or try Petfinder.com hit on classified ads then adoptable pets. You can do a search by state and then by animal (doing the breed usually doesn’t work) – the small and furry are at the end of the list. Depending on the state there are often one or 2 chins listed – and even if the people want an adoption fee of $100 or so “to make sure he goes to a good home” they will usually throw in the cage. Also, people tend to abandon chins at pet stores so you might check with any pet stores in the area that sells rodentia – I know my local pet store get them that way a few times a year.
January 19, 2007 at 6:03 pm #529368By the way, if the parental units are not happy with the idea of a chinchilla I hereby disavow any knowledge of the preceding post outlining ideas on where to get one.
(But they are really, really cute and you should have one).
January 19, 2007 at 9:38 pm #529369I do miss my chinchillas. The do get abit bigger then a dego and are so soft and cuddly! I had a male grey and an albino female, but alas they only had all grey babies. We sold them for 100 each when we bred them and that was pretty cheap. I think they go for almost 200 around here for a single. The albino was worth alot. Eventually they grew old and the female died so we gave the male away to a couple who bought one of the babies so it wouldn’t be lonely. They are very sensative, like degus. It’s very hard to keep just one of them without them becoming depressed. It’s expensive, but they do live quite an impressive lifespan for a rodent. Degu’s live about the same lenght too though and they are alot cheaper to buy. The woman I got my degus from had hers for about 12 years now.

😆 😆 😆 Disavowment is pretty hard when both parental units can keep an eye on this forum.
