It is a scary situation. Having been within 2500 feet of 2 different wildfires, one in Colorado and another in Montana, I can honestly tell you if you don’t think thru exactly what you are going to do in advance you will leave behind things you might find important later.

For me,  my first priority is always the animals, so I load up the horses, dogs and cats first. After that I grab the fire safe. In the fire safe I keep all important documents. Such as birth certificates, wedding certificate, the wills and legal papers for the house. I also keep a thumb drive with my photos on it in the fire safe. It may not have all the most current photos but at least some photos will still be there after a fire. I make a point of keeping the safe in a very easy to access place so I wont need to waste time trying to dig it out of the back of a closet. Also remember to buy a small enough safe that you will be able to pick it up and move it if you need to. Even empty, they can be heavy.

The other thing I do is to keep a Rubbermaid container with at least 2 changes of clothes and other basic necessities in it out in the garage. At least that way if I were to lose the house I might still be able to have a set of clean clothes available to me elsewhere.

After loading that up, depending upon how close the fire is, or how much time the fire marshal has given you, you can start to load up other things such as heirlooms and Windstones.

In some case you don’t have time for any of that. In that case. I just pray to have enough time to get me and the dogs and cats loaded and, if I still had the horses, to open the gates to let them run free. At least that way they can possibly run ahead of the fire and I can catch them later. I always branded my horses, just so they could be easily identified in case they ever got loose.

Always remember life comes first, everything else, as beloved as it may be, really is just stuff. Most of it can be replaced. You and your loved ones, can’t.

That is scary!  Sorry that happened to you neighbor Bodine but that is good you saw it and they put it out before it could spread!  Also those are good tips Stormdancer!  It is good to be prepared for something like that just in case as you never know what could happen!

Looking for rainbow or pink & teal grab bags!

          Yeow!
I had a very very minor fire in my kitchen once that started while I was out. I had set a stack of papers in front of the toaster oven, and that nudged the dial to put it on “keep warm”. Then I went out shopping. When I came back, I walked into smoke, but it was still isolated on the non-flammable countertop. I grabbed the fire extinguisher (always have one by each exit!) and hosed it down, then gave my cats the food call. The greedy one came running. I grabbed her, gave her to a neighbor, and went back in. Scaredy-cat was nearby and I grabbed her. She was afraid of the outdoors. As soon as I got out on the back porch with her, she panicked, wriggled free and ran back in. By that time the fire department had arrived. One of the firemen told me they usually can rescue dogs, but they usually either can’t find the cats or they can’t catch them. I eventually found scaredy-cat under the recliner in the living room.

I keep telling myself I need to get a fire safe, but even that experience hasn’t pushed me to actually do it. I think I’ll look on Amazon after I finish this post….

My keyboard is broken. I keep pressing "Escape", but I'm still here.

We tend to take life for granted and complain when it’s too mundane but this kind of excitement we don’t need.It did however open my thoughts to the possibility and I found out awful news from the fire marshall. Here ,where we live,if your place burns down and you don’t have four lots to build a solid foundation home you cannot rebuild nor replace your mh.I had never heard of such a thing. Now I see why my neighbor mentions buying my place every year. This sheds a new light on my situation.

StormDancer-all good advice. The pets first, safe second,Queen Azura  on the way out and run because we have too much ammo to grab at once.

Sorry you guys have had such close calls too.Fire is a demon.
