The people who hit him stopped, but only after my boyfriend darted across the road after it happened. The poor thing lied dying for about 10 minutes before he slipped away…it was just awful. Even more disturbing was when we finally found the owner he just shrugged and said “Well, what can you do?”
People just make me so disgusted in humanity sometimes….
Anyway, of course, when we came home we hugged and cuddled Ein, my welsh corgi, for a while when we came back after seeing the lab. We brought him outside to do his business and noticed he has suddenly developed blood in his stool. The stool is not tarry or loose, just the plain old normal variety, but just bloody. His diet hasn’t changed at all so I don’t know what suddenly caused this problem. He is acting his playful self and doesn’t seem to be acting any different in his regular behavior. Just a happy puppy. He’s still very young, only about 4 now so I’m hoping it’s nothing too serious. I’m going to have to take him to the vet, but I know they are just going to tell me to change his diet and send me home with a fat bill and no real answers. I’ve been searching online for what else could be causing it, but there are so many things it’s impossible to tell without doing tests. Any advice on what I can do in the mean time?

January 13, 2008 at 6:49 am #655976My first advice is get him to a vet of course. Better safe and broker than sorry and mourning.
Since his personality and diet hasnt changed, and hes otherwise normal, Id say he could have strained a bit when pooping and may have rub a hemmroid or pushed too hard. Happens to ppl all the time.
Watch his eliminations closely, collect any sample for a fecal analysis for your vet before they ask you (fresher the better). And, watch very closely for ANY changes in his normal routine or personality. It could just be a one time thing and he doesnt sound like hes suffering at all. Is he cleaning himself there more than usual? Has he done the “boot scoot” rubbing his butt on your carpets? He could have rubbed a ‘roid and it just seemed like blood was in the stool when he went.
In the end, a vet is always your safest and smartest bet. Good luck. I lit a healing candle for him as well as a passing one for the lost Lab (some owners should be shot). Please keep us updated.
January 13, 2008 at 9:19 am #655977Dragon, I may get slammed for this, but you dont need to take him to the vet. I asked the same question on this very forum a while back. If the blood is thick and dark and keeps on coming, you will need a vets opinion. If its just a little blood in the stool and the pup seems fine (Like you said he did) then its not a problem. Dont waste money to have the vet tell you the same thing. I can try to dig up my thread, if you need.
As for the poor pup that got hit, that is horrible. If it makes you feel better, he was probably in shock and didnt feel a thing. Its the same endorphine that comes into people when they get bit by a shark or get in an accident and dont feel anything for a while. Doggies have it to. Its so very sad about the owner, but some people should just not have pets. I hope they get fined or something. Leash laws are pretty prevelent over there, arent they?
January 13, 2008 at 10:42 am #655978I hope everything works out with your newish puppy! You need to come around more and share this stuff. 😉
We had a small black dog get hit in front of our house, too. The local shelter came and picked it up. The people said they didn’t think they could save it, as it looked like it’s back legs were crushed:-( We never heard back from them, so they must have put it down. No one came around looking for the poor thing or posted signs. *sigh*
January 13, 2008 at 12:43 pm #655979I agree with Ski, watch him, but more than likely the blood in the stool is nothing to worry about.
However, if you continue to see it and in large amounts, see the vet. He may have colitis which would need meds to control during the episode and then a bland diet to prevent it in future. But don’t worry overmuch, it sounds like he is fine, just keep an eye on his stools to see if this is an isolated incident or something that is occuring regularly.
Once you have a pattern, then you can go to the vet with a fresh stool and go from there. But since he is acting normally and doesn’t seem to be sick, I’d just watch him for now.

January 13, 2008 at 2:35 pm #655980Thanks everyone for the advice. I will wait a day or two and see what develops. He went this morning and the blood seems to be gone, but I’m still weary. He is too awkwardly shaped to even clean his bum himself ad he never has done the carpet bum shuffle that I have seen. His little legs are too small I’d imagine 🙂
If it was something really serious I would be at the vet in a heart beat, but a lot of people said the same yu did Ski. That more often then not, in young pets it’s not too serious. Of course, if it starts to become worse I will take him to the vet right away.
I talked to Shaun about it, and I think he has been maybe getting a few too many milkbones lately. ith us always working opposite shifts he’s been getting more treats then usual I think.
As for the lab, the poor little guy didnt seem like she felt much, (I’m assuming it was a girl since she had a pink collar) but all the same it was awful to watch. It was a very chilly night so we guessed the owner didn’t want to bring the dog out to go to the bathroom on a leash and since he didn’t have a fence the dog probably ran off and he didn’t care enough to catch her and figured she’d come back on her own. Since no people were hurt or bitten the town won’t really give a rat’s behind why she was running around the street. Just goes to show how a little bit of laziness can cause so much heartache. One thing is for sure is my puppy got a lot of extra love lastnight. He slept in bed with us all night 😆
I will keep everyone posted on how things develop. Thanks again! Much love!

January 13, 2008 at 9:36 pm #655982I second that DM I hope that black lab owner burns in HELL forever. I can’t undertand people like that why do they even bother to get an animal if they don’t care about them. Last Saturday the car two cars ahead of us hit a small white dog and didn’t even stop. We did but it was to late to do anything for the poor little thing except move it to the side of the road and when we came back that way later it was gone so I assume it’s owner fund it and and took it home. But I cried for quite awhile about it I was so upset.
January 13, 2008 at 10:32 pm #655983Blood in the stool has many possible causes; some are pretty harmless, like too many treats or getting too excited over a squirrel or a visitor (stress, whether happy or unhappy, can easily cause inflammation of the colon in dogs). Other causes are definitely not harmless. If Ein’s appetite remains normal and the blood in the stool stops within 24 hours, then you may be fine. But having blood in the stool means that the lining of the intestine is irritated, and that means bacteria living in the intestine now have an open doorway into the bloodstream. So be cautious. If Ein seems sleepier than normal, or slower to eat, or vomits, then it’s a good idea to take him to the vet because these can be signs that the problem is getting beyond what his body’s defenses can handle. Hopefully he will not do any of these things, though, and bounce back fine.
As for the owner of that lab: sometimes one has to believe in things like karma and reincarnation, because it seems like there’s no justice. So I do. If that fellow was truly a lazy, remorseless owner who made little effort to keep his dog off the street, then it’ll come back on him hard someday. In the meantime, I’m sure sorry that you had to witness something like that. 🙁 That’s a really stressful, painful thing to go through. Hang in there.
