This one was epic in the painting because a) them feathers have deep detail that throw off the finicky line thing and b) that PYO isn’t symetrical. I know, like, duh! none of them are. But this one posed problems because the design was symetrical.
I’m really, really happy with the outcome.
The pictures truly DO NOT do him justice; I will try to take pics outside once the rain stops. The flash makes things seem a bit fuzzy at times, and while the close-ups show off Melody’s detailing, they make my lines seem a bit off and remove some of the lines’ crispness. I think it might be the blowing up of the pic. I’ve finally come to terms with the fact that I’m just not a good photographer…
Anyway, here’s a Westcoast native phoenix – Raven & Salmon.

June 25, 2012 at 9:26 pm #882346Looks terrific! Not going to antique him at all? I could almost see doing a grayish brown to look like the aged cedar of a totem pole. Either way though, what a challenge to paint–you pulled it off very well.

I’m not planning on it, as it’s based on the drawings more than the totems. Next time, I could go for a totem look and have the base more woody looking and then antique… hmm… I have a blank griffin begging to be painted.
