I will not be going to work today, and likely a bunch of us won’t be either. I am afraid they will have to shut the plant down for the day, cause there is no way in hell I can get there, and I am sure I won’t be the only one.
Sad thing is I looked out my window when I got up and dressed and it was clear, finished dressing and packing lunch then went out the door to a blast of snow…28 mph winds driving lots and lots of snow.
I tried to drive to work anyway, just driving down my street, which I know well, I drove into one of the field edges halfway down. This didn’t bode well. Made it to the stop sign, then started down the road, got another mile. Visibility was so bad I was only able to go about 10 mph, and I was using my neighbor’s Xmas lights as maps to make sure I was on the road, tell you guys anything?
I considered the rest of the drive, the fact that once I cleared town there would be no lights at all on either side of the road and ditches and steep dropoffs, along with the slick snow and decided that trying to get to work wasn’t worth dying for.
Because there is very little chance that I would actually get there anyway in these conditions. So I turned around and went back home. It took me 15 mins just to go 2.5 miles…at that rate it would take me a minimum of an hour to reach work anyway, and it is only 10 miles away.
I called in, told them what I was dealing with, told them I would try again if the weather let up enough for me to get there. I will call again in a little while when I know someone might be there. But considering my supervisor lives up in Gooding which when it snows bad here, it is about 3x worse there, she probably won’t make it either and I pray she doesn’t try. Because I don’t want her killed, I happen to like her. 🙂
My other supervisor only lives 3 miles from work, she might make it there, but I am quite sure everyone else will not. Worst part is, I am supposed to get a key from a co-worker today so I can do her job for her over the next 2 weeks while she is on vacation. At least the key is available from the mechanics, but that is gonna be a big pain to get it from them.
I am a bit unhappy, because I have been doing so well in getting to work early since the snow started. And if I had left say about 10 mins sooner I might have made it to work before the storm hit. But then, I might have ended up stuck there with no work to do since I don’t think the trucks that bring the fish in will be able to drive in this. So overall I think today is just going to be a wash for everyone. Those who make it to work aren’t likely to be able to get home, and most likely there won’t be any work to do, since no one can drive in this.
I think I am gonna go throw on my jacket and check my horses, then maybe wrap a few more gifts and consider returning to bed.

December 19, 2008 at 11:09 am #746552Well it has let up and I could possibly go now, but I am worried that I would get halfway there and have it hit again, what should I do?

December 19, 2008 at 11:53 am #746553Have you called to ask what the situation is at the plant? How many other people managed to get to work?
December 19, 2008 at 12:05 pm #746554Just make sure you stay alive!!
December 19, 2008 at 12:08 pm #746555The snow storm hasn’t started here yet, but the school buses are cancelled, so I’ll be working from home.
Check with the plant; I’m sure they don’t want their employees risking themselves on iffy roads.
Read my books! Volume 1 and 2 of A Dragon Medley are available now.

so did you end up staying home? Sounds like you should have. Even if it cleared up for a bit the roads would still be pretty bad
*passes some Hot Cocoa and a Candy CaneDecember 19, 2008 at 4:07 pm #746557I stayed home, I will probably get written up for not coming after the worst of it stopped, but hell, after a start like that what do you expect? I am worried that I would get there and then have the same problem come up for the return trip home.
Besides, I have many things I need to get done here, so I will do them and call it good. If they write me up on Monday, I won’t be happy, and will definately talk to the head honcho about it if they threaten to fire me or suspend me over it.
I know they will likely be pissed because they were shorthanded already and it will put a strain on already stretched resources, but I know I am not the only one who had to go that early who didn’t show.

You sound like a good conscientious hard worker, and considering, I’m sure there were quite a few people whose conscience didn’t worry them too much about not showing up. I wouldn’t worry about it and enjoy the time off to get things done. Working in a factory type setting, they should know the old adage “Safety First!” 😆 😆 Relax and deal with things as they come on Mon. Especially if you call and no one answers, that’s kind of a sure sign no one else went in!
