I went up today and he is still on the vent but they took him of the sedatives and he woke up pretty quick. He was a little upset that the breathing tube was still in but happy that it was all over. One of the first things he wanted to do was look at the mess they made of him. I pulled back his gown so he could see but all he could do was nod his head. The surgeon said he is happy with how things are turning out so I was happy to hear that. They are looking at taking the breathing tube out tomorrow and then they will get him up and walking around. Here is a pic of me by his bedside. He wants me to take pictures so he can document his whole transplant. You can see where his incision is at the nipple line and the chest tubes are just below that. He has 6 chest tubes in right now.
Thanks for the picture – it’s nice to have faces to go with the stories!
I am so happy for you that things are going well. I hope he can get out of the hospital soon and recover at home. Do you have any idea how long he will have to stay?
They told us 2-3 weeks when we were going for the whole transplant work up. Once he is home I will have to take off work for 2 weeks to care for him. I still can’t belive it actually happened. I’m not ready to breath a sigh of relief yet since the surgeon said the first 24-72 hours are critical. I don’t think I will feel ok about all this until he is home and doing well.
So glad to hear that things are moving forward for you. Thanks for sharing the pic. Like ddvm says, it’s nice to see who we’ve been hearing so much about. 🙂 Positive thoughts for smoother sailing from here on out!
