Well, this is NOT the update I’d hoped for. 🙁 Without going into details, building did not start last week as planned. It didn’t start today like it was supposed to either. We got the building permit, ok, but there were instructions with it to have lines shot showing the property lines. So, the good news is, the surveyor has been here today. The bad news is, the property lines are NOT where they are supposed to be! 😯 It’s 10′ closer to the front of the house than we thought it was, and we were going by old survey markers. That puts the house 14′ from the line instead of the minimum 20′. Of coarse, my first question was how can two different surveys be so different? The surveyor told us that the difference is the equipment that they are using now. It’s far more advanced than what they were using 50 years ago. He told us it’s not uncommon to find property lines varying by several feet. So…….now we have to get a variance, which we “should” be able to get. What’s it going to cost? $336 (that’s on top of $500 for todays news). How long will it take to get? About 3 weeks! I can’t believe how much money we’ve already spent and have little to show for it. I’m torn between really angry, frustrated, and depressed. On top of this, my husband has had very little work for weeks now, and things are very stressful at my work too. I’ve had about all I can take right now.
My husband keeps telling me that it will all work out, that this is just how these things go. I’m sure it will, but right now, it just doesn’t feel like it. I am so desperate for this addition and I am not taking the set backs well at all anymore. I really need some space of my own. 🙁

October 1, 2008 at 2:28 am #733577I’m sorry, Copper. It always seems like something, doesn’t it?
October 1, 2008 at 2:32 am #733578We’re trying to fix up our condo to sell and it seems every step we take ends up taking 3 more steps than anticipated, not to mention more money. So I know exactly how frustrating it is. I’m out of room here and going out of my mind.
I do hope things ease up for you soon. And for all of us with troubles right now.
October 1, 2008 at 2:45 am #733579Oy! 😯 I don’t know what to say except I’m sorry! Having to wait even longer for something desperately wanted is terribly hard and then to be told it may not happen… I’m keeping my fingers, toes and eyes crossed for you!

Me too (and with my needing new glasses right now, that is seriously not hard)!
October 1, 2008 at 5:09 am #733581Thanks everybody. Back to the waiting game. *sigh*
October 1, 2008 at 5:12 am #733582You have a very pretty house, copper. I’m sorry to hear about the setback, but your hubby is right – it’ll turn out. 😉
October 1, 2008 at 7:20 pm #733583Want for I should “move” those property lines….like in the opposite direction? 😈 Which office am I paying a visit to?
Good luck with the beurocrats Copper! I’m sure it will all workout and you’ll have more room to put Windstones in no time!
October 2, 2008 at 12:21 am #733584I wish. 🙂 I can’t believe all the hoops we have to jump thru for this. Now we have to make a map of all the surrounding properties, showing placement and size of all exsisting buildings. Like they don’t have all this info on file? 🙄
Nice to have you back Cat. 🙂

October 2, 2008 at 3:06 pm #733586Several of us are having the same sort of problems right now, look at what Kyrin just told us. All we can do is huddle together and make the best out of what we are given.
Feel free to vent and up date hereNovember 20, 2008 at 2:37 am #733587Well, we finally got our variance approved. 😯 They just put us thru the ringer for it. Three different times we were told we would have it by the end of the week, and then not get it. Then when we got it we found that they put in it that nothing could protrude beyond the front wall, ummm…..like the eves or the garden window that are right there in the plans? Guess nobody noticed it on the onsite inspection either. 🙄 This was yesterday, and we were just sick about it. What saved us was that it also said that we were building to match the existing structure, which has eves and a garden window, and they had all that info! So when I got home tonight, I didn’t know what to expect. I really didn’t expect to hear from them until the end of the week. But we got it. They were very apologetic. They knew how it needed to be worded, but forgot. 🙄
In the mean time, they said we could clear ground and put in forms as long as we knew that if the variance was denied, it was our problem. The guys already have concrete poured in the forms and will pour the walls on Friday, I think. They’ll be dropping off lumber next week. Jeez, I almost feel shaky writing this. I’ve been so stressed out over it, and felt physically sick last night. I’m almost afraid to get excited about it now. I’m still waiting for the next bomb to drop. 🙄
Something else we are doing that I wanted to share. I had said that we were going to enclose the new deck so the the cats can go out on it. Well, we aren’t doing that now. We found a fencing system that is designed for cats! It made by Purr..fect Fence. We were impressed enough with it that we have already bought the kit (they had a great sale). So instead of having just the deck, they will have the deck and a 10’x50′ run of the yard! I am really excited about it. I won’t try to explain how it all works here, except that the key to it is the fact that the top of the fence arches back over the pen, making it impossible to climb over. The fence itself is not very climber friendly either. Here’s the website if anyone wants to check it out. http://www.purrfectfence.com/default.asp
