I have Watergazer’s blue jay/maltese tiger, but I don’t think I could ever sell it. It’s one of my favorite pieces in my entire Windstone collection.
I’m curious about what you’ve heard about her reputation…I truly think that you’re confusing her for someone else (I think I know who it is you’re confusing her with, but I don’t want to start anything). The PYO I mentioned above was a commission that went very well. She sent me an initial colored layout to see if I approved of what she was going to do and sent me pictures as she progressed with it. I also purchased her “Anatomy of a Werewolf” book and four of the sketches and that went well as well. I don’t recall her ever wronging someone one this forum, and I’d happily recommend her as an artist even though I don’t know if she’s painting PYO’s anymore.
December 5, 2009 at 4:21 pm #794769Aha! Skylover! So you have the Blue one I loved so much! 😀
I don’t much about Watergazers rep. I bought the one I got from her on ebay and never commissioned her, but while she was one here I didn’t hear anything bad about her. She was pretty professional when she was around here. Last I knew, I thought she was ill or something… maybe just lost interest or got very busy with other things? She did do a book, though I didn’t know it got published! I see her artwork on deviantart though from time to time so I know she’s still around, I just don’t know if she paints Windstones any more.

Dreamscape, Orion, Poison Dart, Fireberry, Spangler + Tigerberry DragonsDecember 9, 2009 at 2:11 am #794770I know I have a Kirin of Watergazer’s (bought from a forum member). I’ll have to edit this later with the name of the piece.
I know I’ve been inspired by pieces and gone from there, or I have one dragon that I know has been compared to (it’s pretty close/similar) to a coloration, though on another dragon sculpt, by Jennifer, but mine was done beforehand. Someone assumed I was inspired by or copied Jennifer (mine was done a few months before based off of ferns I saw while hiking on vacation one fall in Brunswick, CA and I took a picture of them ). I prefer to commission artists when I can for things, however, if I am doing a piece strictly for me and my own enjoyment and not for resale because I know I can’t get the artist to commission (MIA, no longer taking commissions, dead, etc. – example, there are two kirins I like done by watergazer that I love the scales on, but I’d rather have a different fur color/pattern… she’s no longer available to paint), I don’t worry so much about if someone will say it looks similar to something already done. I usually add a tweak or two, or incorporate part of my own style or that is more specific to my own tastes anyways (maybe I wanted more antiquing, or the eyelids/snout a different color, different fur color, but the same scales, etc. or same pattern in a different color combo). If I know it will be close to something already done and is just for me, I just don’t photograph it to post it anywhere (though I do photo to document for my own records and note inspiration/source accordingly), and I mark the piece as ‘inspired by ‘, though I haven’t tried to copy anything precisely at this time (I have too many of my own ideas to get to!), though I did draw Melody’s oriental dragon way back in high school for practice with a still life and flowing lines (went off a picture from an old brochure or catalog… not sure if I still have the drawing or not… was a personal project, not for class.). If I’m painting something to sell, I try to make sure it doesn’t cause problems with copyrights, but I know people come up with the ‘hey, did you copy x’, despite having done something first or researched to make sure you aren’t violating copyrights, just because I’m not working professionally as an artist (so I date my pieces on the bottoms… I didn’t on a few of my first pyos). With some color schemes and color combinations, especially if inspired by a pattern or combo found in nature, it’s bound to happen for similar things to pop up, like with my one little dragon.
Edited for clarity, thanks to a little more sleep.
December 9, 2009 at 5:56 pm #794771I won’t say more as I am not out to toss mud but I do know that kitsunelady’s fears do have a foundation.

She painted the spring green kirin, bottom left. I painted the one on the top right (Prax is poking her in the butt;)…I’m not anywhere near as talented as Watergazer, but the color layout is similar to hers. *shrugs* I think she is still on LiveJournal if you wanted to try to contact her.
She painted the Husky wolf for me. It is a memorial to Kavic, the dog I had growing up. She painted the wolf on the far right, too.
Not to change the subject but it makes me giddy one of my PYOs are in each of your pictures as well 😳

December 10, 2009 at 7:23 am #794775Watergazer’s book Anatomy of a Werewolf (contact info here) is worth every penny, and if you’re interested in that sort of thing, I strongly suggest you get a copy. I just have to say I waited about a year for my copy after paying for it; it took her quite a while to finish the book after getting a slew of pre-orders. I guess that’s not the best way to do business, but in the end I did get the book.
She quit painting Windstones because of time (she has a little son) and because they weren’t selling so well. She used to have two or three on E-bay at the same time and kind of swamped the market with her beautiful work.December 10, 2009 at 2:09 pm #794776drag0nfeathers wrote:Not to change the subject but it makes me giddy one of my PYOs are in each of your pictures as well 😳
You know I adore your work! After the holidays I’m going to bug you about acquiring that butterfly dragon pyo. We waaaants it Precious! 😆 Sadly, I lack the funds for so many of the pyos that members list for sale. 😥 I enjoy every one of the ones I own as much as “regular” Windstones.
