Thought I should pass this one on
Warning-Pancake/Cake Mix/Bisquick
Hi everyone,
A student at HBHS had pancakes this week and it almost became fatal.
His Mom (registered nurse) made him pancakes, dropped him off at school
and headed to play tennis. She never takes her cell phone on the court
but did this time and her son called to say he was having trouble
breathing. She told him to go to the nurse immediately and proceeded to
call school and alert the nurse. The nurse called the paramedics and
they were there in 3 minutes and worked on the boy all the way to the
hospital. He came so close to dying. Evidently this is more common then
I ever knew. Check the expiration dates on packages like pancakes and
cake mixes that have yeast which over time develop spores.Apparently, the mold that forms in old mixes can be toxic!
Throw away ALL OUTDATED pancake mix, Bisquick, brownie mixes etc you
have in your home. You can check this
websit…….http://www.snopes.com/medical/toxins/pancake.asp
P. S. You might want to tell this to your children, grandchildren,
nephews, nieces and anyone else who keeps these type of mixes in the
cupboard.October 3, 2008 at 5:34 pm #734924thank you. In our house…food typically doesnt hang around long enough to really go bad…but it’s always good to double check!
October 6, 2008 at 10:48 pm #734925While this is somewhat true, it is way overblown, the molds are not toxic it is that there are people who are highly allergic to them.
October 7, 2008 at 12:31 am #734926If my parents ate boxed pancakes, I would pass that along to them, since my mother is allergic to everything under the sun (and then some). But as far as I know, my family makes pancakes from scratch (and are so much better that way).

Yum…Dreams of mom’s home made waffles, we use the same mix for either. I prefer the waffles, they’re better cold.

They made pancakes until we got a waffle grill…. then every Sunday we had waffles….. *wants waffles* I need to ask for a waffle grill for Christmas now! LOL
November 8, 2008 at 10:59 pm #734929also check food before you buy it! I have had eggs that were a month expired, organic fruit juice that was almost three months expired, and those Oscar Mayer deli meats that were two weeks expired. I realized it when I got home on all of those ocassions, and went right back to the store for new (non expired) replacements. But now I check my food when I buy it.
August 30, 2009 at 2:23 am #734930I use boxed pancake mix a lot (I LOVE pancakes!! Especially with fresh blueberries mixed in… *drool*)…..but I’ve known this a while. I have a tendency to check expiration dates on EVERYTHING, not just pancake mix.
