I have been working this evening on my first PYO. This is my progress. The end result will be a Taisho Sanke Koi Ki-Rin.
Using brushes only. The eyes will NOT be what is pictured, I just popped those in so it didnt look creepy. Painted the fur white, the scales white with golden interference on top. The hooves are gold. Starting to work on the orange scales. The black markings on the scales and details on the eyes and nostrils are what I have left to do.
Comments are welcome. This is a work in progress so she is NOT finished yet. And while this isnt my first time painting gypsum, this IS my first Windstone PYO.
December 15, 2011 at 4:47 am #865669I love koi-rins, this one is so pretty! I love the hooves!
December 15, 2011 at 5:04 am #865674I love what you’ve done with the scales and hooves. My only suggestion would be to add a hint of antiquing to the white fur. Obviously, it would have to be super light antique, but just enough bring out the details.
For example, this ebay ki-rin has a trace of light blue antique in the fur.
Maybe you could use pale gold or really diluted orange on yours. Of course, it’s your call. 🙂
December 15, 2011 at 5:09 am #865675I love it so far, Wampus!:D

December 15, 2011 at 12:11 pm #865701I want to antique. Just not quite sure how to go about it. The way I understand it, you basically seal the painting with a matte seal, then wipe the antique color over it so that it gets in the cracks until youre happy with it, then re-seal? Do you brush it on or use a sponge or use your fingertips?

Those are all good ways of doing it. It comes down to personal choice. If you haven’t watched them yet, both drag0nfeathers and Koishiikitty have antiquing methods that vary a great deal in their video contest videos. Since you already have all your colors on for the most part, I’d recommend the method that drag0n uses in this case, but I’m going to suggest using a very light color at first for the best results. You may want to seal it first since your base is such a light color. Unfortunately, antiquing a white or very light windstone is probably the hardest color to antique, because it can look ‘dirty’ easily.

My art: featherdust.comDecember 15, 2011 at 1:35 pm #865708Im thinking of using a very very light grey to do it. Thats what Melody used on the the mother koi-rin I have. Her fur is antiqued in light light grey and her scales seem to be antiqued in black.
December 16, 2011 at 6:08 pm #865889Very nice Wampus. I have seen some people post that they antique in small areas to see how it looks before they do the whole sculpt, that way they can decide if it needs to be lighter, darker or a different color. But, the best advice I got was to clear coat or seal the scult and make sure it is dry before you try to antique. That way you won’t ruin your nice paint job before playing around with the antiquing. 🙂 Can’t wait to see your finished kirin.
December 28, 2011 at 1:58 pm #867450Yea, when I have to antique white, I actually use a REALLY thin detail brush and pipe in the antique in the cracks the hard way and then wipe off the access in the same manner as I do in my tutorial, but just in REALLY SMALL sections. Then, sometimes, I have to touch up areas with the white again to get rid of any areas I don’t like.
That’s how I did this one

It’s also REALLY easy to accidently peel paint off of kirin scales so you have to be especially gentle when wiping away acess. You might benefit more from sealing it first before you antique it to prevet that. I never seal before I antique because I don’t normally like how the antique takes on top of a clearcoat, but that’s just me. You loose your shadow effect and get sharper defintion when you do it on a topcoat so it depends on what you want the end result to be. It’s certainly easier to top coat it first though, but I guess I just need to be difficult ^_^
