It’s funny and annoying at the same time, because when I catch the dog doing something bad, he’ll run and hide next to my husband and just stare at me like “daddy will protect me”….grrr. I hate that.
My dog does the same exact thing. I don’t like it either.

If not I would look for an older retired couple to take him, he is a small dog if re-homing ends up being your only option he should be easy to place at least. Have you talked to his breeder? Most breeders have first option in this event, the dog has to go back to them or they can sue you, my contract for Tonka says she can sue me for 7500 if I re-home him, something to check into.
Maybe another dog to keep him company would do the trick. When I put my dog Marney outside alone she freaks but when I put one of my other dogs Spike or Tuff out there with her she is ok. Dogs need friends too.March 6, 2008 at 5:25 pm #674596AdaraSky wrote:ruffian wrote:The only thing that helps with Tonka, and he has horrible seperation anxiety, is Ruffian, the other dog. If he gets along with other dogs and can deal with another dog in the house, this may be what works. We adopted Lucky about a year and a half ago (we’ve had Soot for years). If my parents take Soot to the vet and I’m still sleeping, Lucky, not seeing me in the morning yet, thinks he’s been left alone in the house. He WAILS uncontrollably. I woke up and let him know I was there and you could tell he was visibly upset and just like, OMG! Someone is here! YAY! He doesn’t do well left alone. This was after about 5 minutes of my parents leaving for the vet.
*Note. Just read that you can’t get other dogs. Pooey. Maybe try the doggie day care for a day and see how it goes? Maybe a neighbor has another dog and they get along and is home all day. Kind of like play dates?
March 6, 2008 at 6:22 pm #674597The dog is best buddies with the cat. They sleep and play together all the time. But even keeping them together doesn’t help.
As for the scent thing, we would leave a shirt or something of ours on top of the kennel when he was kenneled. Right now there are clothes all over the place in the bedroom where we keep him. He shredded the last thing we gave him while he was being kenneled.
The dog behaviorist at the petsmart in the area is not that good from what I’ve been told. My husband’s parent took their dog to that guy and it really didn’t do much of anything in terms of helping the dog out. That animal was extrememly agressive with people he didn’t know when they came to the house. And he was also nasty with other dogs. He would get into the trash when his parents were outta the house…that never stopped even after going to the specialist. They ended up putting him in a rescue.

March 6, 2008 at 8:25 pm #674598The trainers at petsmart are not qualified for this type of problem.
Start checking with your vet and the other vets in the area and see if they can refer you to a behaviorist.

Seconded! Some of the dog trainers at Petsmart are good, but some are not. I worked at two different stores… one had an AWESOME trainer, the second had a crappy one. But none are qualified for helping with this level of behavioral problems. Their certification only goes as far as basic obedience. You want someone specific to help with this. Check with your vet as Rusti said. 🙂
