Oh man, that’s one of the coolest suits I’ve ever SEEN! 😀 WOW. Congrats on getting that made! Jeez… I don’t know if I’ve ever wanted a suit of any kind, but now I kind of do… I really like the legs – I know they’re beefy, but they actually do look like they’re jointed right, which I don’t know how you could do better except maybe with those springy stilt shoes. How do you open and close the mouth? Is it rigged up to your own jaw somehow?

-J R R TolkienSeptember 2, 2011 at 3:09 am #855018I read on the suit creator’s page that it’s her own invention, and she’s quite secretive about it. (Rightfully so; it’s an incredible trick and she’s applying for a patent for the mechanism.)
Sure wish I knew too though!
September 6, 2011 at 1:47 pm #855529Hey all! Dragon*Con was amazing! It was great to hang out with you Wampus! With out you and your man I would have been trampled so thank you!
So Raptor Won 4 awards!! She won honorable mention and Audience choice At Fridays nights contest. This contest was based solely on workmanship. My Honey and I won best Movie Hall costume contest, this is voted by the con goers and than we won best Sci/Fi costume at the masquerade! We had a cute little skit that had to do with eating Chick-Fil-A chicken! ^^
BIG BIG Congrats to Monoyasha! These awards go to her portfolio!
September 6, 2011 at 2:10 pm #855532Awesome Griffinlover! Glad to hear you had fun and that your raptor was such a hit! 🙂 Congrats to Monoyasha for another job well done!
Btw, you were posted in CosplayinAmerica’s flicker album from the con (posted on Facebook):
You specifically: http://www.flickr.com/photos/cosplayinamerica/sets/72157627466112013/September 6, 2011 at 2:22 pm #855535We had a cute little skit that had to do with eating Chick-Fil-A chicken! ^^
We were watching it in our hotel room on d*con tv. First thing I said was ‘HEY! Chick-Fil-A’s not open on Sunday!’.
But seriously though, it was fun. Despite the crush of 40000 people and some of them having no concept of what its like being more than 30 minutes in that suit. Trying to get you to stop and take pics anyway while you’re dying in there. I’ll bring a pointy stick next time.
September 6, 2011 at 4:10 pm #855541September 6, 2011 at 5:07 pm #855551That’s great! I’m so glad that you got so many awards!!! Monoyasha is the best!
I have a question now Griffinlover!!!
Now tell me the truth!
Despite sweating your butt off and nearly succumbing to heat stroke, probably loosing a few pounds due to utter dehydration, being mauled by overly excited con goers, and not getting a damn thing you really wanted accomplished because you got stopped every two feet for photos while getting yelled at by security for blocking walkways……….. it was fun being a raptor, wasn’t it? 😉

It was an amazing feeling! Words are hard to describe it! Once the mask is on you are no longer you, it feels very surreal. People would actually look at the raptors eyes when talking to me.
There were also some real meanies out there to. Some humped my tail, pulled the head to them and open the mouth, its connected to mine so it hurt. Also people telling me my stance was all wrong. Which it was but wearing that suit in the stance I am suppose to be in hurt my back so much.
All in all tho it was sooo worth it! I can’t wait till it gets cooler here and I will wear it to the park! ^_^September 7, 2011 at 12:01 am #855570Oh yes! You do find lots of those too. When I was running around a con in my Kyuubi kitsune costume, I had lots of tail pulling (usually that doesn’t bother me too much because I sewed the CRAP out of them just because I knew that would happen) but the thing that REALLY made me mad was this one girl who was shouting at me “YOU’RE A FURRY! YOU’RE A FURRY!” and then grabbed my left ear and WRENCHED my whole head while pulling and screaming… OH! I wanted to KILL that girl! To this day now my ear is lopsided on one side of the head….really pissed me off after paying Monoyasha to make it for me.
Some people just don’t have any idea how much work it is not only to make these costumes, but to wear them… additionally they don’t have any respect for the cost. Most people are very thoughtful though, it’s just a few bad eggs really that annoy me at most cons. Sounds like you had a few as well. As long as you didn’t sustain any permanent damage I’d still say you had a successful debut!
I’m glad you had fun! Yes, it is quite surreal to be someone else… not even someone else, but some THING else. Even if it’s just for a weekend! ^_^
When you go to the park you have to post a video! That’s going to be hysterical!!!

Does having a “handler” help?

Oh goodness yes! Having a handler is almost a must. Steve had to use the “daddy voice” on some people. lol.
I will say this, don’t get a full suit like this if you are claustrophobic. I had a few mini panic attacks at first. I finally got use to it. Without Steve guiding me I would have been so much worse off.September 7, 2011 at 4:16 am #855611I hadn’t thought of people being so …. ugh. Disrespectful? It’s definitely ignorance. Excuse the blanket stereotype but a lot of the ‘nerdy’ group that go to conventions really are lacking in basic social tact. Not all, not most. But enough of them to be noticeable. They don’t acknowledge social boundaries and personal space (i.e. tail humping).
And a handler always helps. Without one in a costume as ‘photo popular’ as the raptor it would take far too long to get from point A to point B. Someone has to yell at people to GTFO of the way when you really DO need to get back to change out of it. Like when you overheat in a fullsuit or something with heavy layers.

I laughed out loud at that. Hilarous, and yes, often true about the social tact. We get the Comic Con crowds here each year. It’s great people-watching.
