Very weird and tragic day for our family. As fellow animal lovers, I’m sure the forum folks here will relate.
We recently, as in maybe a month, month and a half ago? Lost Poopie, my sister’s (as well as sort of a household dog) due to old age and many complications within that spectrum. Today we will have to bury Lily, her feline companion. She is roughly 13, going on 14 years old so was always basically a part of the dog’s life from practically day one. I am actually the one who caught Lily when she snuggled up in engine of my car to warm up during the winter as a kitten. ( I almost killed her by turning my car on, but I always honk my horn before I turn my car on in the winter JUST in case ) Anyway, I was shocked to get a phonecall at work from my sister to tell me she passed away.
She was overweight, but despite that was a very healthy, active, expert mouse killing machine. She was spayed at a young age and has never had ANY problems what so ever health wise. I guess she ate breakfast, was acting normal, and was scratching to go outside. This typically is the norm, but since Poopie died, she hasn’t wanted to go out at all for some reason. We thought maybe it was a coincidence and it was just too hot and she prefered to be inside in the air conditioning. Well, today she was adamant she wanted to go outside. We have a fenced in yard, a very small fenced in yard at that, so she can’t go far. My sister let her out and she layed on our cement stoop. My sister went back outside to get her 15 minutes later because she had to go to work and didn’t want to leave her outside for the day and she was dead. In the same spot, laying down, just dead. She checked her all over, we have a lot of crappy people where we live so we thought maybe someone shot her with a bebe gun or something, but she had no wounds, no nothing. Just dead. We think maybe it was a heart attack since she was a fat cat, but it was just sudden and abrupt and so out of nowhere. I asked her if she thought it could have been heat stroke of some sort, but she was in the same spot. Didn’t seem to try and get back in the house (usually she will claw the metal door to come in and it’s loud) and it was only about 10 – 15 minutes so she really doesn’t think it was that. Her boyfriend was slapping the cat in the face trying to wake her up in disbelief. I’m heading home from work in about a half an hour to help bury her. I’m in total shock.
It’s hard to read cats sometimes, but I wonder if it was the lack of companionship from Poopie passing away, or if it was just bad timing.

In my opnion, like with people (paticularly the elderly), sometimes they pass away shortly after their companions. My friend had this happen with her Grandparents. I’ve heard many stories of healthy animals passing after they loose their companions as well. With the cat, it could have been depression from loss, age, or both. One never knows for sure.

I agree. I’ve heard of cats going to hide to die – it was her time, she knew it and just wanted to be left in peace to go 🙁 I’m so sorry… at the same time, it’s nice to know that now, she’s with her lifelong friend!

My Kitty is 14-15 and was diagnosed with kidney failure several months ago. I hope she goes quietly and peacefully before the effects make her life not so much fun.

Thank you everyone. I had a cat with kidney failure as well. I used to give her fluids at home but she did have a few more comfortable years before we had to put her down.
We buried her in between two large hydrangeas in the flower bed.

I remember when I was in my early twenties, we had our 3 dogs all pass away within a few months of each other. We thought maybe one died from the heat one hot day when she was trying to go into the basement to cool down but they were all older and I think it was maybe just their time. It was hard though losing them so close together. I also have a cat with a a kidney problem or something. The vet didn’t quite know but our cat Ashley is old and pretty skinny now but she just won’t give up the will to live. I am not sure how long she has left but we try and make the best of it everyday.

July 14, 2014 at 9:20 am #915536After my grandmother passed away, her daschund came to live with my mother and brother for a while. She and our elderly collie were goo friends. However, our collie suffered from some neurological condition and was incredibly old and in poor health, and within a year she passed away. Within months of that happening, the daschund started to have mysterious seizures that the vet couldn’t explain, and within weeks of our collie’s death the daschund passed away too. It’s so strange when these things happen, and it’s hard to say if there’s a rational explanation or if it’s coincidence or something else. It does seem though that your cat knew that something wasn’t quite right and wanted to spend those last moments outside. It’s not easy losing a friend and a companion. 🙁 If you need us we’re here for you.
July 14, 2014 at 7:20 pm #915541The stoop was her favorite place, so she did at least die outside in the sun in her favorite spot. It’s still so weird. We’ve never had an animal pass so suddenly like this. Not without a “pre-warning” that something was wrong.

I know it’s heartbreaking to lose a pet. And I know from personal experience how difficult it is to lose one so close to another’s passing. You have my sympathies.

July 14, 2014 at 10:36 pm #915549Just petting Shady and Ein about 10 times as much. They are the last two “older” animals in the household. Ein (my corgi) is creeping up to about 13 years old and Shady (a once show worthy Birman) is going to be 24 years old in the fall! I thought Shady would be gone long before Poopie or Lily… I was EIGHT years old when Shady was born! He’s not going to win any beauty contests anymore with his snaggle teeth and mangy fur, but he’s still kicking and loves to climb in my lap and purr and drool and drool and purr while I scratch his ears. We wanna give him a bath but I’m afraid at his age he would have a heart attack too and neither my sister or I could deal 3 animals gone right now. He’s already on borrowed time.

Dreamscape, Orion, Poison Dart, Fireberry, Spangler + Tigerberry DragonsJuly 15, 2014 at 1:58 am #915563I’m so sorry to hear about your pets drag0n. I had to put my 14 year old Akita Keiko down recently, so I can relate to how much it sucks.
It’s hard to say what causes an animal to go downhill so quickly, but when I was growing up, we had a cat and dog that pretty much grew up together as well. When we brought the dog home, the cat pushed up against the screen door and wanted to meet her. They were pretty much constant companions for 11 years until the dog developed cancer. The cat was perfectly healthy until the dog died, and then her health went into steady decline. She seemed unable to properly digest her food, and despite our best efforts and many vet visits, she died about a year later.
July 15, 2014 at 3:08 am #915566I am so, so sorry. I lost my cat suddenly as well, just last Tuesday. She was also healthy – The vet said it was a blood clot, that it is relatively common, and that it couldn’t have been prevented. Her heart over-compensated for the clot and eventually gave out.
Her name was also Lilly… how strange.
I don’t know if a healthy animal can die of sorrow, but I know they can become depressed when a lifelong partner or mate dies. It may have weakened her will to live, possibly even her immune system, letting something else in.
I can’t describe or help with the pain of losing a pet, especially a healthy one, and so suddenly… My heart goes out to you. I am so sorry for your loss.
