I just recently purchased a Red Fire OW from a Windstone dealer, and he arrived with a little bit of the gold paint peeling off one of his front claws. I’ve read that DecoColor gold paint pens are what to use to fix this sort of thing. And that they are what Windstone actually uses to detail the dragons with at the factory.
So, I went to a Michael’s craft store last night to find them, and the only one they had is pictured here.
My question is, would this be okay to use to touch him up? I saw that another forum member (Kachina)posted pics of her paint pens after touching up her OW, and they looked different than this one. Here is the ones she got-
Does anyone know if these pens come in different tones of gold? The one I got is a calligraphy pen, but it has a chisel type tip that is 2 mm. I’ve tested it on paper… and applies very smootly without blotching or leaking. I just don’t want to risk applying the wrong color on the dragon. I was thinking the number on the side (125-S) was a color of gold… but am starting to think that it just might identify the tip size? 😕
Any help from any of you guys would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!:D
– Please click me!!!I have a DecoColor Liquid Gold Fine Line opaque paint marker….it is 200-S Gold. It matched perfectly. I have the exact paint pen in silver and it is marked 200-S Silver, so I think it does refer to the tip size…
I’d be worried about it scratching the paint even worse, since Calligraphy pens are usually very errmmm can’t find exact word, but maybe “Stiff” “Hard” or “Metal” would be the best I can think of right now.
I’ve had these types of pen before. With a paint pen, ‘calligraphy’ refers only to the shape of the soft tip, and not to an actual calligraphy pen (which is of course metal and sharp for using ink). There is no difference in paint color, just tip style.

They are the same color, and the number does just correspond to the tip size and type. You said you tried the paint on paper, hold it up next to the dragon and see how close the color is. That’s what I did before I took the plunge and touched up my ruby OW.
Okay, cool! Thanks so much for all the input. The tip on this pen is soft… just like Jennifer said. I’m gonna give it a go tonight then. I’m very glad to hear that the there is no difference in color. I just got worried since it wasn’t the same one others have used. I thought that it might have varied slightly because it’s intended for calligraphy type art. Last thing I want to do is mess up his pretty nails! 😆

I did notice that about the numbers after I looked at it again. So figured it must be the tip size, rather than color.
He’s packed up in his box right now. I’m gonna take him out this evening, and try it out. Hope it works okay. What finish did you use after applying the paint pen? DZ suggested Golden brand. But I’m not sure if I should get matte, glossy, or satin. I’ve got a bottle of Delta satin clearcoat… but that stuff is pretty cheap.

As they are enamel/alkyd based (which is why they smell soooo bad) I would recommend against covering an entire PYO with them, as it has the same problems as painting a piece just with oil or enamel paints and does not allow the gypsum to ‘breathe’. Small areas like claws, etc, is okay.

I used the Krylon 18kt gold leafing pen to touch up my peacock old warrior, and it worked just fine 😀
