Since I haven’t been working, I find I now have time to do the things that I was either too tired or too busy to do–like clean out that closet and drawers and rid myself of items that I no longer use or can wear because of my expanding horizons. I like to write so I thought what the heck, I sometimes have these things go through my mind that I like to share and they don’t necessarily need a reply but just out there for your enjoyment, dismay, disgust, whatever!
Today I cleaned out my drawers. My inspriation came with a bag from Disabled Veterans to fill with your discardables to be picked up to help fill someone’s need. Well I had 2 of these bags from previous mailings and thought I’m having trouble getting stuff into these drawers because I have stuff I don’t wear and need to get rid of. Sounds simple enough doesn’t it–the old saying goes that if you haven’t used/worn it in a year, you don’t need it. Well I found my discardables had categories–nostalgia, too cute to get rid of, I’ll lose the weight some day, and it’s gotta go.
Nostalgia are those items like tee shirts you get from special events that you can’t bear to part with. You have them tucked on the bottom and never see them until you undertake such a task as cleaning. You pull them out and this rush of memories comes over you taking you back to that time, that event and all the sights, smells and sounds of the time. You’ll never wear the thing but you can’t bear to get rid of it because of those memories. So you sigh and stuff it back into the drawer and I found I had a little layer of these memories’ piling up. So much for cleaning things out but I reasoned to myself that it was only a little pile.
Now comes the too cute to get rid of. Almost like the nostalgia pile but these are decorated items that no longer fit that you can’t bear to get rid of because they’re soooo cute. You reason that someday you’ll find that special little girl that you will shower these things on. I’ll keep it, but I’ll give it to someone I know and it eases the guilt of stuffing yet another layer back into the drawer. Then there’s that thought of how cute you used to look in it and damnit, I’m not giving it away just so some other little cutie will look cute in it. Let her find her own cute items.
My favorite, I’ll lose the weight some day XD The icon says it all and this category is also closely related to the ‘too cute to get rid of’ stuff. These are usually designer items that are most likely out of style but cost you a small ransom and you can’t bear the thought of just getting rid of them. Waste of money you know. So you reason that if you can just lose those extra pounds these items can once again be worn and shine with their former glory. You reason that it would cost you an even larger ransom to replace them and so you’re actually saving money by keeping them. Another layer goes back into the drawer.
Finally the it’s gotta go stuff. These are things that you wonder what drug you were on when you bought them and whether they fit or not, you have no problem getting rid of. What made me buy those lime green pants? This latter category is ironic because I will gladly get rid of a pair of pants in say size 9 because they no longer fit, yet keep a pair of size 6 because someday I’ll lose the weight XD Again, the icon says it all.
So going through the categories I did manage to fill 3 of those bags with room to spare in the third one. The truth is if I had seriously gotten rid of all the items I should have I would have run out of bags a long time ago. But I’m cutting down on the waste of bags I reason. So hopefully I won’t have cleaner’s remorse and dive back into them before they’re picked up next Friday. Hmmm….maybe I should have waited and done this Thursday night.
March 13, 2010 at 8:57 pm #808477Are we related? XD XD XD
March 14, 2010 at 6:59 pm #808478Oh, I can totally relate!! Except my “what the heck was I thinking” pile is more stuff my mom keeps giving me. I normally wear 2 colours, black and red. Everything she likes to buy me is pastel, pinks, baby blue…because I would look so cute in pastel. Or has sequins :puke: . Yeah, not going to happen. Those are an automatic Goodwill bag.
March 15, 2010 at 6:40 am #808479That’s funny, I just got rid of a bag of cloths too. Good thing we all have different tastes; somebody will be glad for the gift.
March 15, 2010 at 7:37 am #808480My old closet at my parents house is still filled with stuff from when I was growing up. Every once in a while I’ll go through it for the nostalgia, and I’ll still run across something that makes me think why the heck would I ever want that LOL! 😈
March 16, 2010 at 1:07 am #808481I have a whole suitcase full of souvenir T-shirts. I don’t think that I will ever get rid of them.
