Anyone here like/collect his art prints by chance? (just thought I’d toss that one up & see what landed…) :hi:

February 23, 2011 at 3:23 pm #838928Lots of people collect Thomas Kinkade. I like some of his stuff, but I don’t collect, myself. I actually find his stuff very similar to Terry Redlin as far as the style and technique, if not always the subject matter. Being South Dakota born and raised, if I had to choose between the two, I’d go with Redlin 😉
By the way, if you like what Kinkade does with light, you might like to look at some of Machineguts’ (on this forum) PYO pieces with stars on them.February 23, 2011 at 6:00 pm #838929Jennifer wrote:Oop! No comment. :X XD XD

Nothing wrong! I’m just not a fan (of his art or ethics). But that’s the great thing in life– we all enjoy different things! 😀

My art: featherdust.comFebruary 24, 2011 at 3:47 pm #838931Understood, & opinion fully respected.
If I may be so bold as to ask also, what are the opinions of his ethics? Honesty also fully respected in the giving if so wished. I don’t exactly agree with his mass production of merchandising across the scale of human decorative consumption, nor his lack of ability to avoid a DUI (yep, he got popped); but his usage of religious tones, if not overly done in places, is still welcomed in this day and age.
Aiit, if I just opened a can of really bad worms, please tell me & I’ll shaddup… but could be worth the discussion if anyone’s feeling venty.
February 24, 2011 at 5:08 pm #838932I don’t think you opened up a bad can of worms. They might be referring to allegations that the company that he owns and distributes his work has failed to pay various galleries that sold his work. There are also some allegations that he, personally, encouraged individuals to open up galleries that sell his work in places that couldn’t support the market. I think the latter is simply bad business decision making on the part of the people opening the galleries, though. The DUI thing–well, I personally understand that people make mistakes (though, more than one DUI might be less a mistake than willful negligence), but a person should expect to be more heavily scrutinized for such a mistake when they marked themselves as a devout evangelical Christian whose work is inspired by religion and is meant to “contain a larger moral dimension.” That being said, with the exception of the DUI, nothing else has actually been proven, and the company that is accused of not paying is not Kinkade, himself.
February 24, 2011 at 5:25 pm #838933I don’t know anything at all about the man…..but to me his pieces all look too much alike.
They just don’t suit my personal taste….too many of his works seem to be: pretty flowers, pretty house or building=new art…..though there are the seasonal variations…I feel like I’m lookin at the same piece over and over. Plus I think he does a bit of overkill on merchandising.
In a nutshell…I feel he has great talent with detail and shading, the pieces he does are very beautiful…..I just wish he had more variety to his subject matter. I get the impression his first best seller was a house in pretty atmosphere, then he hedged himself in by just doing that theme over and over and over, then printing it on everything in sight. He has great talent…I’d just like to see him stretch out a bit and try new things with it.
February 24, 2011 at 5:27 pm #838934i personally don’t mind his work but never would collect it. 😕 when i was taking a figure drawing class in college we had a field trip to the moma and where required to right a report on the trip. well one student couldn’t make it and was given the option to find a gallery a write a report on what he saw there…. he went to a Thomas Kincaid gallery and grabbed a pamphlet and then edited the wording a little bit for the report. oh gooodness you should have seen the look on my teachers (pandone) face when he read “Thomas Kincaid” on the title of the report. pandone sputtered then said out loud ” well tell me about Thomas Kincaid” everyone in the class couldn’t help but snicker or just laugh out loud since pandone looked like his brain had mildly exploded.
ever since that moment i haven’t minded Thomas Kincaid that much since without him that moment never would have happened 😀
February 24, 2011 at 10:04 pm #838935I also had an art professor who hinted rather openly that he didn’t think much of Thomas Kinkade for some sort of ethical reason. I never found out what it was…probably because his work didn’t tickle my fancy, so I just wasn’t interested in his doings. >.>; I’m a fan of strong lines and more intense colors (if any…I do like sketches and black and white drawing a lot). He’s too soft and fluffy for me. I know a lot of people who love him, though. Mostly older ladies, for some reason.
February 25, 2011 at 5:30 am #838936I personally don’t collect any of his art prints, but I do know that my mother in law really likes his art! But I dunno much about much about either.

February 25, 2011 at 6:41 am #838937Whoah, coolness in the replies… I didn’t realize he struck such a memorable cord with so many. With me, my interest started w/ the death of my mother. ‘Garden of Promise’ was displayed on a wall @ the funeral home, as well as the theme I chose for the Thank you cards and sign-in book.

I can see his art as very fitting for such a situation. And you are allowed to like whatever you want
