This is supposed to be a commission for tc cat. She really liked the one I had up for auction and was excited to see one similar, done in blue and silver instead of gold and green. I have been taking photos along the way, but for now I’m posting only what he looks like right now. I’m sorry to say I don’t like him at all. The silver pigment I used was too steel colored and a touch grainy. I have done a few more coats of white metallic and it’s looking better….

The pigment does look a hair grainy, and I’ve never had that problem before, but I imagine there must be ways to even it out. Very fine sandpaper, or a light touch with a soft brush when it’s still drying, perhaps? I know some paints that leave a grainy texture are “cured” with a good clear coat or finish afterwards.
May 1, 2007 at 11:03 pm #569454I dunno, but I do like how he’s coming out. I like the silver too… even though you say it’s “too” steel colored, I think it works. …perhaps the graininess will give him character? 😆
Maybe you’ll start liking him more the more you work on him!Are you masking his eyes at all? o.O
May 1, 2007 at 11:13 pm #569455Yup, eyes are masked. I haven’t ever had this much trouble with the texture of pearl ex pigments. The only reason the silver is looking better is because it has 3 coats of metalic white over it…It looks better in the pictures.
May 1, 2007 at 11:20 pm #569456I think he’s looking great! For grainyness, maybe a really fine emery paper? I know you can get some really fine stuff (looks like translucent paper) a Michael’s Craft Store up here and it worked fine for some delicate stuff I was doing. I’ll try to fine the name for you.
May 1, 2007 at 11:34 pm #569457I’ve got 2000grit, do you think that would be fine enough?
May 1, 2007 at 11:52 pm #569458if you add just a little black to your white metalic, this might help. It might, I am not sure. it is worth mixing a little to see if it get the more silvery color you want.
May 2, 2007 at 12:01 am #569459Kioshi, was it you who used the pearl ex pigment powders?? This is what I used in silver and am really unhappy with the outcome. I have used a bunch of others and they all apply perfectly smooth and give excellent coverage…Maybe I should just used silver paint.
May 2, 2007 at 12:06 am #569460this is the stuf I got and used:
http://www.dickblick.com/zz020/06f/it is very find grain..maybe you mixed too much into the paint and that is why it turned out grainy?
May 2, 2007 at 12:13 am #569461Oh yes, I got some of that too, but not for this dragon. I’m gonna have to play around until I get to like the look of him…I’m glad you guys like him tho!
May 2, 2007 at 12:15 am #569462he really is looking very pretty.
May 2, 2007 at 12:22 am #569463I think he’s beautiful. 😀
May 2, 2007 at 12:28 am #569464Look’n Good! I think the graininess will give him character. 😆
