Makes me wonder if people REALLY realize just how FAR 10 miles is, especially in snow. Driving doesn’t seem like much, but at Basic Training (and a few times after) we had to do a variety of road marches up to 12 miles.
And I was (supposedly) in shape and *trained* to do these marches. They were HELL.
10 miles is a LOOOOONG way to go. There’s no excuse for the father to have let his children try and walk and I agree with Kyrin about when he went to search, he gave up ’cause he got cold? What about your kids, man!?
No, I don’t know the whole story, but it sounds like a series of tragic mistakes. π
Windstone collector in remission. π
January 2, 2009 at 3:59 pm #748562I feel awful for the dad; he was intolerably stupid and his daughter paid for it, but now he’s in torment. I also think he spaced out that there’s a world of difference between 10 miles by car and 10 by foot–even an adult wouldn’t want to do that in such conditions. But since drink was involved… π
I feel really bad for the little boy too, who’s bound to be in a lot of misery over that as he gets older (let alone now).

Not to mention they were stuck in a snowdrift in the cold.
Stupidity and drinking probably made him think walking to a warm house was better.
But still… no excuse for giving up or at least getting help searching ASAPJanuary 2, 2009 at 5:06 pm #748564This is tragic and that guy should get called on it. I’ve walked 10 miles without much of a problem, but that wasn’t in the snow and it wasn’t terribly cold out (it was winter, but not that cold yet… I was wandering around Vienna), but add snow and no stops and kids and that is a completely different ball game! He was out of his mind having his kids walk 10 miles in the cold and snow, then to just give up later because he was cold? No real parent gives up when their child is out in the cold, potentially lost for that length of time and unaccounted for. Complete idiocy. I feel sorry for the brother. π
Sometimes the gene pool lacks some chlorine and a few buggers get through (in this case, the father).

Well that was a bit harsh. Especially since it was the children who paid.
I think she was referring to the father.
