The last few weeks have been busy as we prepare for the 2010 storm season. But this year, things are kicking up a notch! We just got invited into Severe Studios Kansas City team!
James Skivers & Jeff Nielsen are on the KC team with Severe Studios. James saw my storm & tornado photography on Facebook and showed Jeff, the team leader for KC. He was also interested in my radar experience and scheduled for us to meet. We met tonight and it looks like they are bringing us on to the team! This is going to be positively awesome. We will become Associate Chasers for Severe Studios on the KC team. We will be issued all appropriate equipment, including a laptop with live streaming video capability and all weather forecasting models which I will monitor and relay to our team during each chase. This also includes Mobile Threat Net, an amazing weather program that streams from XM WX Satellite Weather.
We can and will get paid, and this is how it works. We sign a contract stating that the footage we shoot during each chase with Severe Studios is freely available for their usage, and for brokering with all major networks. Severe Studios then sells footage provided by each chaser to The Weather Channel, NOAA, and all major news networks. All extreme footage is desired, but tornadoes bring the highest return of course. I now understand why there is a TIV and a Dominator. If you capture footage inside a tornado, networks pay $800.00 – $900.00 a second. A SECOND! That’s not to say I’m going to go buy an armored car and drive into the tornado, but dang, I’m tempted! 😈 Anyhow, video captured by chasers on the team is sold, and the earnings are distributed to each member.
One point I like about this group is that they put the lives of others first if we find people affected by the severe weather. i.e. help families & individuals out of their basement/storm cellar, call 911 if needed in any way, etc. More info about Severe Studios here:

Once everything is finalized I’ll post the link to my live streaming video on the site, and you’ll be able to watch online whenever we’re out on a chase. And chances are you might see some of our footage on tv. Which would rock. 😀
So yeah, I’m FRIGGIN EXCITED!
