West Valley–and I love it! Beautiful campus! While I was walking the track I saw a little bunny off to the side by the tree. I said ‘hello’ to it every time I passed by and it stayed there for the longest time. That place is like a walk in a park and it’s so quiet and peaceful. I feel I made the right choice by going there and right now, everything I’m finding out about the path tells me I’m going the right way. For once in my life, I just may have finally made the right decision! π
September 10, 2010 at 3:34 am #825454West Valley was my favorite! Their theatre department is fabulous! That’s where I did my costuming and fashion courses and learned how to hand bead a gown…

September 10, 2010 at 4:29 am #825455Good luck! I just know that you are going to do great! I hope you enjoy every minute of it.
September 10, 2010 at 6:36 pm #825456Sounds like you’re having a good time. That’s great!!
September 10, 2010 at 6:48 pm #825457I’m glad it sounds to be going so well for you! Hah, my experience going back to school several years ago was that I got into a lot of trouble in some classes for my complete lack of computer skills (did not have and had never used one at that time), but that in doing reports in A&P and Microbiology i had an edge finding articles; none of them had ever heard of the Reader’s Guide to Periodical Literature.
My husband would like me to go back to school and finish, but I can’t really see that happening what with the need to work and my job demanding a completely open schedule. No other jobs to be had around here so what do you do. That bit about the laptop is scary, though… do they really require one? No way I could get one, even if I could get the time.September 10, 2010 at 9:53 pm #825458pipsxlch wrote:I’m glad it sounds to be going so well for you! I just personally felt for me that I had a lot of down time between a couple of classes–4 hours–that I could best utilize my time by doing homework at the college. They have a lab but it’s filled at times. The college is about 10 miles away from me, so I would be wasting time and gas going home. I decided that a laptop would benefit me tremendously so decided to get one.
It’s getting to the point though that you need to have a computer a home for school! They have labs but that could be so inconvenient and you’re never guaranteed to be able to get on a computer–then there’s the issue of virsuses! Everyone tells me how much fun they’ have on their laptop so let’s see if it was worth it! π
September 14, 2010 at 5:18 am #825459Im so glad it has turned out to be the right thing for you ^_^ West Valley sounds like one of the branches of colleges Im attending-Cy Fair–there’s a man made river that runs through the campus with HUGE fountains and rocks and fish, all kinds of trees, an outdoor chess board, and even some wildlife.
I think its a shame classrooms are on the verge of going by the wayside. I am taking one class that is “paperless” everything is turned in online and our quizzes are online….but when I signed up, its not classified as an online class! I am very old fashioned in that way-I want to sit in a classroom and listen to someone talk about all the information they have spent YEARS and years, maybe decades, gathering. Whats the point of an online class? You are basically teaching yourself!
September 14, 2010 at 2:48 pm #825460Wolfen, there is actually a good social trend explanation for that! Besides the fact that it saves the school money (for greater profit, sigh!) but the younger generations are more open to learning this way than they are for physical classes. Sad, but true…
This entire video is worth watching, But note in particular what he talks about from 5:33 to 7:10 , and you can see where I am going here, I think. My mother who works with boys in school every day sees this as well. It’s not ALL kids, but a lot of them.

My art: featherdust.comSeptember 14, 2010 at 8:11 pm #825461Not to hijack LadyFirebird’s thread but- you are right, Nam. More people (must be after my generation!) find it appealing to “go to college in your underwear” but this is a contributing factor to the growing number of people with little or no social skills. If you don’t interact with people on a daily basis, and practice your social skills, you come to live in your own world where what you say goes-and in an extreme case, this can breed criminals and killers and nazis who have nothing but hate or marginal thoughts input into their heads all day long without any kind of buffer zone (peers) saying “uh, dude, that’s not right…” or something along those lines. *cuts self off from going on another rant*
SO LadyFirebird, tell us about your classes! Which ones do you like? Are you taking medical classes NOW or just pre requisites? The program I’m trying for is one for which you have to apply-and its pretty competitive-they look at work experience if you have any, and you have to get one of a list of immunizations before being accepted. Is your program like that?
September 15, 2010 at 12:27 am #825462I enjoyed looking at how some of these younger ones do things via internet. I agree, being in a classroom setting helps you to learn how to interact with others. In the real world you have to do that. I’m not much for those online classes myself for that very reason. At this college they do have an email system set up where you can communicate and even turn in homework via email through the college system. You have the classes you are taking and the instructor post outlines, homework etc or make announcements for the next class meeting. I like it because I can communicate with the instructor if I needed to–let them know if I’m unable to come to class and turn my homework in via email. But you physically go to class!
The classes I’m taking are pretty basic–I won’t be taking any lab classes until next year. This is just a two year certificate and I already have an AA from another community college and those credits will transfer over here and I’ll get an AS from them plus the certificate.
Personally, I’ve always wanted to get into the medical field but when you have a job that is taking care of your bills, you don’t give it much thought. Then I didn’t have the time or energy to go back. So being laid off earlier this year was a blessing in disguise because now I can pursue this desire.
The classes I’m in are basic medical terminology and a couple of medical administrative type classes–what to expect in a medical office. Then there is a one unit introductory class to the medical assistant field. Everything I hear about what I want to get into is all good. Doesn’t matter how old you are as long as you’re good at what you’re doing, they are very happy with you. The people I’ve been meeting who are already in the field and are just brushing up on some of their knowledge are all pleased with what they’re doing. It won’t be a laid back type of job, but one where you are helping people. I feel I’m good at that.
On the other side, I’m getting a lot of exercise. I get there early and walk the track. This morning I was able to go around nine times and I’m shooting for ten this Thursday. I weighed myself and I think I could have lost about 3 or 4 pounds already. So I’m gaining knowledge and losing weight! π
All in all I’m having a great time and meeting all sorts of neat people. Who knows, they could be my coworkers one day! π
September 16, 2010 at 4:54 pm #825463I’ one of those that prefers learning in a class room since most of I do is “hands on” and I learn better my being shown than by being told π
