Sorry to revive a thread from the dead…..
I’m curious about my Flion. We have had this fellow a long time, since new. I think I’ve photographed the location of the mold number. It’s still kind of hard to see but I think it’s a “1”? it’s upside down to it seems like a “7” Any thoughts?
Hmmm, might need to make the images smaller.
Thank you!

The mold number would be in a circle under the right wing, I think what you see on yours is just a scratch! My oldest Flion has no mold number. I also have one with a “2” and one with a “17”. The mold numbers can indicate roughly which piece is oldest, but we had many molds in use at the same time and a mold was replaced when it wore out or was torn, so it is possible that there could be pieces cast out of low number molds that are the same age as pieces with higher mold numbers.
If he has no number or circle under the right wing, then he is probably one of the earliest castings.Sometimes there will be just a circle with nothing very legible in it, this happened when the mold maker forgot to re-do the number when he cast a new mold.
January 19, 2013 at 12:18 am #891995How odd. I just closely examined the wings on my Flion and he doesn’t have any numbers on his wings at all. 😕
He is probably an early one. We started numbering the molds at some point, so not all pieces have numbers.
I am not sure when mold numbering started, but probably when we started casting lots and lots of molds of the same thing at a time. The molds are numbered so that the casters could easily tell which mold, out of many identical molds, to inspect if a piece was found to have a defect.January 19, 2013 at 2:19 am #892013Here is a link to the full size picture under his wing so I’m pretty sure he didn’t get a number 🙂
I know that we have had him since the very early nineties.
As much as we enjoy him, we need to downsize some of our collection and he’ll be looking for a new home soon. I will leave the pictures up so people have a reference when the search the forum.
thank you for your time!

March 12, 2014 at 2:19 am #909644Bumping this thread because there’s one on eBay that has number 21 in a sneaky little spot under his right wing.
I wondered about it and it made me look at mine. Which is what caused me to hunt down (and bump) this thread.
Mine is number 12. But, boy, I had to hunt for it.
How many numbered pieces were there?Life is beautiful.

How many numbered pieces were there?I don’t know. We didn’t keep records of mold numbers, they were just used by the casters to trace a casting back to the mold it was out of. Early Flions weren’t numbered, and once in awhile the mold maker would forget to put a number on a new mold when he made it.

March 12, 2014 at 5:00 pm #909668Most of the molds were given mold numbers, but they were/are placed in the eye sockets so the glass eyes cover them. Only things without open eyes, or eyes that were too small for numbers, will have them in a visible spot.
Some little flapcats have numbers under their wings too. I am not sure what other pieces have visible numbers.March 12, 2014 at 9:59 pm #909673Most of the molds were given mold numbers, but they were/are placed in the eye sockets so the glass eyes cover them.
