The answer may be starring me right in the eye, but since were talking about horns here, can I ask (anyone) if you have a tarnished gold horn, what is the best way to get it back into shiny like new condition? Go beyond paper leaf because I dont have that at the moment! 🙂 Can it be cleaned, so to speak? Or does it have to be redone, for lack of a better phrase?
As for silver horns, sure! Im up for that when it can be made available. Cool suggestion!
I looked around and I found this link. If you scroll all the way to the bottom it describes cleaning gold plated jewelry. Though obviously a unicorn horn isn’t necessarily jewelry, the gold plating process should be very similar.

The way I understand it is once the gold plating wears off, you’re pretty much done. :/ You can try using a nice gold paint pen or once you’re able to, apply gold leaf.

My art: featherdust.comDecember 18, 2007 at 2:50 am #593196Thank you for that link Nam! It was helpful. Im friends with a bunch of brothers who own and run their own local and very popular jewelers store. I think theyd get a kick out of it if I brought a Kirin in to replate the horn! I know theyd do it for free but it would definitely be something new for them! I doubt they even know what a Kirin is! Ha! 😆
However, thats last resort. That way if I mess it up further with trying to repair it, they can go from there. With regard to leafing, how do you do it? Does it come in sheets of paper and you cut small pieces and use a medium to affix it to the horn?
Sorry if Im hijacking your SILVER HORN thread. Hence, I’ll say it yet again…
IM ALL FOR SILVER HORNS ON ANY PIECES WHEN THEY CAN BE DONE! WILL BE A COOL MIXTURE AND DIFFERENT FLAIR! Maybe we can try it out on the PYOs to see how it goes and get the growing pains out that way. But then choosing one production piece and trying it with a silver horn and seeing what interest it will generate, will be a good indicator. Personally, I never thought of this idea so kudos for thinking of it! Silver is an extremely important (if not the most important) color in my spiritualistic base as well as in many others tied to metaphysics. And, most of us tied to these beliefs, always seem to be interested in fantasy, mythical creatures, so bonus!!!
December 18, 2007 at 3:30 am #593197PT, if you want genuine gold leaf, you have to buy it in a book of (usually) 25 sheets. It will run you at least $50! X_x Then you use a sizing, apply it to the surface, wait for it to get just the right level of tacky, then apply the leaf with a special brush (it’s so thin you can’t handle it, it’ll tear).
You can apply fake gold leaf (usually a brass compound… looks nearly like real gold but isn’t) for less money though! It depends on if you want the real leaf or not.
I don’t know if they can re-plate your kirin’s horn. It would almost certainly need to be removed as most plating is done via immersion in a solution and electroplating…. not really possible on a piece with the horn stuck in! And as you could do way more damage to the kirin trying to loose the horn.. :/

My art: featherdust.comDecember 18, 2007 at 3:42 am #593198Genuine helpful advice but 😯 at the $50. Luckily it’s not too tarnished so I personally could handle it. I’ll see what I can do but I also might just live with it.
Thank you for all the help!!!

Thank you for all the help!!!If you can get it out, I could replace it with a new one… Warning though, it is really difficult to get the horns out without damaging the sculpture. The horn usually breaks off, leaving a part of it in the socket. This prevents the new horn from fitting back into the hole properly.
We have been talking about starting an official repair service at Windstone to take care of these sorts of things. Maybe when we get settled into the new place we can do that.December 18, 2007 at 6:31 pm #593200Melody wrote:PhoenixTears wrote:Genuine helpful advice but 😯 at the $50. Do those angel wings get in the way when youre sculpting or painting?! 😛That is a very kind and sweet offer from you, especially considering how busy everyone over at the factory is. They have so much to ship out in just orders alone!
However, due to your warning and what Ive previously heard from others, Id rather live with a slightly tarnished horn (gives her character, the old girl), than take a chance trying to dislodge it and risk flawing the otherwise perfect sculpture.
But I do want you to know I sincerely thank you for the thought of replacing her horn. And it IS the thought that counts. Very grateful, but no need for this degree of tarnish.
Holiday HUGS to you!

December 18, 2007 at 7:18 pm #593202^^^ I had to reread it too. She meant if I could get the horn out, she’d send me a replacement horn to put back in. Not that I should ship it to the factory for repair. I thought that first too but reread 😀

No, she said she wanted to start a repair service at the warehouse for people to send in their broken ones to get them fixed. If they do this, they should hire Kyrin to work there. 😀

Yes Emerald- but read what she says first. He latter comment was referring to future hopes, not my current situation. 😀
December 20, 2007 at 2:11 pm #593205I’m definitely liking the idea of silver horns on some pieces. Whether it be PYO, or LP stuff… if that’s even an option. Silver horns would definitely look better with some color schemes, rather than the gold ones. But I tend to like silver more than gold anyway. 😆

That’s what Jasmine asked about… the future hopes. She wasn’t commenting on your situation.
I do hope you can figure out something to fix that horn though. You’ve been dealing with it for some time now, haven’t you? Maybe one of the silver paint pens. Squeeze a little out on a pie tin and then use a very small paintbrush to coat the horn.
June 22, 2008 at 2:44 pm #593207😀 Melody I have a suggestion for your eggs be it on some mother coiled or the royal hatching.
How about painting some spotted like the one picture provided by Lamortefille in my photography thread?
I did notice that a few of us are not found of the gold egg on the mother coiled and some of us like more natural colors.
Like Arlla’s hatching empress
Oh and remember my suggestion a while back at the beginning of this thread about the silver colored horns for the PYOs?
Will there be any after the move?
June 22, 2008 at 3:51 pm #593208But I like the gold horns. t_t Would it be only silver forevermore? Or would we have a choice? =(
