Yes you can still see the bid history. Acording to ebay this has actually helped slow down fake second chance offers. Some of the people who are still getting hit with those are people whose ebay ids are very similar to their email address.

      Quote:

I’d like to address a common question we hear – How do scammers get a bidder’s email address? Unfortunately, a high percentage of eBay members have registered an email address that is very close or identical to their User ID. Fraudsters attempt to send emails to the bidders they are targeting by using the User ID, plus several of the most common domain names – i.e. userid@yahoo.com , userid@gmail.com, userid@hotmail.com, userid@aol.com. This combination yields a very high success rate for them. Subsequently, too many eBay bidders get fooled – and lose their money – as an unfortunate result.

The state of fake Second Chance Offers (or attempts by criminals to tempt you into a false transaction) today
For over a year, these masked User IDs have proven to be very successful on these higher-end listings. In fact, we saw the volume of fake Second Chance Offers for $200 or more drop significantly. We’ve also worked to educate members about the importance of unique email addresses, and we have aggressively targeted members who have risky User ID/email combinations to encourage them to change. Please note – If your User ID matches your email address, please protect yourself by changing your User ID so your user ID doesn’t match your email address.

Good to know. Mine are nothing a like, so I would never had gotten the memo. 😆 I’m still learning about ebay. Although actually I use it mostly to buy Windstones. Since it’s the only way I can get some of the Test Paint, OOAK and AE pieces.

I have a program on my pc…If it gets hacked, the hacker recieves a worm virus which begins on his harddrive randomly shutting down access to all of his windows programs…Yes, it was invented by a hacker, but I got tired of another hacker trying to get into my pc, so I asked for the program. Its great, my pc reads it as random code so it doesn’t do harm to my pc. 😀 Wish Ebay had it… 😈 😆 😆

Let me also state he is a Grey Hat hacker…He doesn’t do malicious things to make life for people hard, he actually hacks the programs hackers create. It is really a very neat thing to listen to him talk about it. 8)

That does sound interesting. I know very little about computers and their inner workings. I’m too busy with the rescue dogs and my own fur kids to spend the amount of time it would need to become an expert. Frankly, I don’t really have the interest either. I like to learn about them but I don’t like to experiment to do it. 🙄 😆

Can’t Windstone set restrictions on their auctions? For example, you can only bid if you have like 3 or 5 positive feedbacks? And that way, legit people can email Windstone and ask if they can bid, and Windstone can allow that person? I think most of us that bid on Windstone’s auctions have at LEAST 5 feedbacks, or even 10. That might stop the hackers.

It might sound unfair at first, but the hackers aren’t fair to the bidders, and it is detering legi people from bidding, and in the end, is unfair to both Windstone AND the real bidders who want the item very badly.

The account that hacked my auction had like 11 positive feedback, so they would have been let into the auction. Not all the dormant accounts have low or nonexistent feedback. Also as new to ebay and the forums if I’d had to jump through a lot of hoops to be allowed to bid on the items I wanted I would probably have gotten mad and said “Ah! screw it, it’s not worth my time or frustration.”

I had a zero feedback in the first several auctions I participated in and everyone thought I wasn’t real it was very frustrating, so we can’t assume that everyone bidding will have high(er) feedback. Like newfie, who’s wife won him the SKs.

With the new system of counting multiple feedbacks it’ll be easier for people to get higher feedback faster, but before it was frustrating becuase I HAD to participate in other auctions I didn’t really care about to get a higher score.

There’s also the manpower that would be necessary. If a newbie wanted to bid on an auction ending on Sunday and sent in an email request on Saturday, nobody would be at Windstone to answer it, so Windstone would lose that person and thier potential bid or they’d have to hire someone to moniter the auctions on the weekends.

I highlighted the areas that were particularly true. It can deter new collectors / collectors that are new to buying Windstone on eBay, and secondly Susie, Karen and Tom simply don’t have the time to implement this sort of thing (not to mention they are only available to do so during business hours, Monday-Friday).

There is no easy solution. 🙁

Careful with that. If a hacker can trace it back to you they can sue you for it, as it’s technically illegal. I know it seems totally unfair, but it’s true. It’s like saying “He punched me first!” but if you threw a punch back, it gets ugly. Our legal system is at times totally construed.

So far, since I advertised in most of the past forums I spent time that I had that program, I never had anther attack. 😆 😆 So, I don’t even know if it works… 😯

I know what you mean. I am pretty new to Ebay. There is no easy solution to the hackers and it is so frustrating to sit back, watch and be totally powerless. 🙁

I don’t think the hacker problem is going to go away unless e-bay gets on the ball to figure something out to stop it. But I have to agree with setsunawolf that all dormant or low feedback accounts are not always hacked. We rarely use e-bay for anything, but I really wanted an SK and couldn’t wait for a production piece to come out. Plus it was a chance to get a OOAK addition to the collection I have. (OK 2 additions 🙂 ) If we would have had to jump through hoops to get permission to bid or if bidding would have been limited to those with higher feedback, I wouldn’t have bothered because it would have been too much trouble or we would have been excluded from bidding had restrictions been in place.

The whole hacker thing sucks, with a capital SUCK, and I personally would hope they all get a life and find something better to do with their time than make life difficult for everyone here, but if you start limiting auction bidding to forum members or to people with high feedback, you’re going to miss out on “newbies” who might have just discovered Windstone and don’t use e-bay a lot. I’m sure deterring new collectors/customers is the last thing anyone wants to see happen!

Exactly. I wish there was an easy fix, but there’s not. I suspect that it’s an even larger problem than we think, but there is little we can do other than write letters to eBay and wait. 🙁

By the way- if any of those of you that have been effected by this want to, polite and well written letters to eBay expressing your frustration (and perhaps emphasizing your reluctance to bid in light of it) probably couldn’t hurt. I’m not saying they’ll do anything, but I imagine the more eBay hears about how it effects the lives of bidders and sellers, the more likely they will be to get the ball rolling on a fix. Honestly, I don’t know what they can do to fix it but there are people out there that get paid big bucks to discover solutions (I’m not one of them!).

With the repetitive nature that Windstone auctions get hacked, is there a disgruntled ex-employee maybe that could be causing this?

It may have been at one time- but the current problem is an eBay-wide problem. :/
