I love rats – my favorite were a pair of black hooded boys named Hope and Crosby. They were super sweet and friendly – more like little dogs. They would do anything for a piece of a Snicker’s bar! 😀

October 28, 2008 at 12:26 am #737655Oh she’s adorable congrats! When I was younger and the movie The Abyss came out, after my mom and I saw it in the theater we went right to the pet store and bought Beanie and Spot, and later added Ben. They were wonderful pets!

they can be pretty clean.. but there’s the fact of the uncontrollable bodily functions… they just go whenever.. and the feces and urine can carry any number of bacteria, even if they are indoor healthy animals..
also the bedding can carry bacteria, the wood chips or other bedding..
because I have asthma and allergies, rodents would be bad for me to have, even our dog and cat bother me.. and they both get regular baths (the only way I can tolerate the cat)
so I can just imagine how bad it would be for someone with a compromised immune system…
there are lists and lists of things you can no longer have..
October 28, 2008 at 2:04 pm #737659Yeah– Frozen’s right. It’s like my parrots. The parrots keep themselves exceedingly clean, but they produce a lot of dust, so anyone with asthma or lung function problems should not keep them. Also unless you clean it up while it is wet, their droppings can start to turn to dust once dry which also leads to airborn particulate. It’s not that the animals are dirty, they are very clean, but unlike in the wild where the wind would sweep away the dust, in our homes it can be a problem.

they carry salmanellia in their poop , I cant be exposed to that . no rodents no reptiles for the same reason , and no birds because of the dust. I cant even clean the cat box unless i suit up like there was a bio-hazard , so i encourage PD to do

October 29, 2008 at 1:49 am #737663Aw, cutie. I love rats. I could have had two hooded rats way back when. (Free everything too) But, my cats harassed my fish for years. I didn’t think two rats would live for long with them around. That’s also forgetting that I can’t have any sort of small animal. I’m too allergic to things. Now I might be able to except I’m still very allergic to all grasses. Still allergic to dust as well.
Don’t mind me… I’m just babbling.
