Hi guys!
As you might have noticed.. or will notice.. we have been getting (and probably will continue to get) some spam on the forum. Why:
As you guys know in the past the old forum got hit heavily with spammers. I fought hard and nuked most spam accounts daily (sometimes as many as 30 per day) so that they could not post. I checked every new user to see if they were legit or not and got rid of the ones that were for sure spammers right away. In this way the users were mostly kept to real users and not bots and spammers.Well, what was happening that I had no control over (I could not access it if I wanted to) is that spammers were hitting the OLD blog pretty hard. Hundreds if not thousands of spam accounts signed up for the blog. Spam accounts are usually bots or scripts (mindless programs that are programmed to look for vulnerable sites, make an account, and post spam without human intervention).
Then, when we migrated to the new site… all of the forum, store and blog accounts were merged into one huge listing! So now all of those blog spam accounts from the old blog can post to the forum. AUGGGHHH. :tired:
So, the spam accounts you’ve been seeing (or might see) were created before the merger. This isn’t some new exploit they are finding with the new forum.
Luckily (I think), many of the accounts probably will just sit idle and not do anything at all. Only some of them will actively ‘try’ to post, and when they do… I will catch them and delete their post(s) and their account.
What should the forum users do?
For now, nothing. Just ignore them. Don’t click any links that spammers post. I’ll see it as a new topic and go in there and get out my BAN HAMMER AND SMASH THEIR ACCOUNT INTO OBLIVION! 👿 Okay maybe that is a bit dramatic, but I will take care of it. 🙂
I know that the ‘flag’ system isn’t working correctly just yet, so don’t worry about it.
Don’t worry about emailing or noting me about spam unless something nasty gets through and it needs to get taken down immediately. I’ll see it otherwise.Volunteer mod- I'm here to help! Email me for the best response: nambroth at gmail.com
