At the moment I have some extreme fun with my Credit Card…
I have this card for years now and used it exclusively for online shopping. Mostly for the same shops and without any problems. Until now.
Now suddenly whenever I try to use it to buy something online I get an error and the information that I can´t use the card.
So I called my credit card company today and they said, they have a new and tighter security system and it seems I am now in some sort of security check which will probably last indefinately. Whenever I buy something outside of Germany there is an automatic security check and the payment gets rejected because the system says „how can it be that this person shopped yesterday in the USA and today in Japan but is registered in Germany. There must be misuse of this card“… What the ****? What do I need a credit card for if not to shop online??
Now everytime I want to buy something online I have to type in my Card information, wait for the error and then call the company so they can unlock the card for 24 hours for this exact shop… Fun, eh?
I definately need to look for a new card because this is really unacceptable! I´m all for security when buying online, don´t get me wrong, but as long as I buy from the same shops and with prizes of around 5-30$ it seems a bit hilarious if this gets blocked.

Did you ever experience something like this?

Dang, that’s really inconvenient. 🙁 I have not had anything like this, the worst I had to do was verify my credit card that I use for my paypal account.

Actually, I use my paypal account for pretty much all online shopping if I can, since I hate entering in my card info on a bunch of sites.

I know some people detest paypal and have good reasons for not using it, but it works for me…. do you use it? Would that help perhaps?

I also use paypal whenever I can, but there are still some shops I frequently use that only offer CC as payment option, especially the ones in Japan. 🙁 It´s always (no) fun to explain the problem in japanese. I´m lucky because my husband studied japanese and speaks it really well, but I wonder what other people do in a situation like this, since english is still a problem in Japan especially in smaller shops…
But life would be so boring if there wouldn´t be any problems 😉

Goodness! I have not ever experienced that. I have a CC with Chase and they wont let me use my card at the gas pumps for some reason (???) yet I can use it online and other places with no problem. They are pretty strict and have declined my card on purchases WITHIN the US because they thought it looked shifty TO THEM…REALLY?!

Wish I had some advice to offer you, but I cant say Ive experienced any international purchasing like that.

Interesting. My only cc is with chase, and I’ve never had any issues with it. Gas pump included. I’ve never been called or anything declined. I don’t use it often (once every two or three months at best? Like if I’m in a bind. But more like once every 6 months without issues) so maybe because of that, they feel nothing is a fraudulent charge.

I’ve never heard of that either. That sounds like a major hassle, isn’t there anything the company can do to make the card easier to use for you? You would think the CC company would want you to be able to use their card frequently.

Once a year or so, my hubby and I go on a shopping spree around Pittsburgh, sometime during the shopping trip I’ll get a phone call from the CC company making sure that it’s me that is using the card every five minutes for unusual purchases, LOL.

Haha, I can imagine that 🙂

In my case it seems that the low amounts are the main problem, because most sites that misuse a card try to withdraw a small amount to see if the card is valid. If this goes through they grab as much as they can until the CC Company blocks the card. Since I mostly have small amounts, they get block on principle regardless if I shopped at the same store for years now with nearly the same amounts every time… What a stupid system.
Tomorrow I will call them again and see if I get any better information. They even have inconveniant service hours. Between 9am and 4pm… 🙁

It is stupid. They can so easily check your buying habits, too! I would try another card.

My card has the same thing….but it actually stopped someone in spain from succeeding in multiple fraudulent charges on my card earlier this month. All I can say is thank goodness! Security is there to keep you safe…and there are just ooodles of people out there who are getting better and better at stealing card info.

For international shopping….I use paypal. For online shopping at all I use paypal pretty exclusively….the only exception being companies that I have a long reputation with, and whom I’m confident in their security.

My CC called me early one morning to ask if I had used my CC in Ireland. My b/f answered the phone and they asked him and he told them NO that I wasn’t even out of bed yet. They immediatly cancelled my card and sent me a new one about a week later. Before they got it stopped somebody charged $12,000 to it but luckily I didn’t have to pay for those charges.
