yeah, dull grey, but it can be polished. I am not sure how long the polish lasts though, or if it tarnishes again. When it is polished it is sort of pretty, but still a different color, not exactly bright “silver”.
June 2, 2011 at 2:56 pm #847042In my experience (in coastal Maryland), polished pewter does “tarnish” over time I don’t know what the effects are in a lower humidity location.
June 2, 2011 at 3:47 pm #847052It does tarnish or loose its sheen over time, especially in areas that have weather and humidity. That sounds a little like a headache– if collectors were disappointed when the horns tarnish. Windstone has to consider what will last for decades and look nice.

My art: featherdust.comJune 2, 2011 at 4:13 pm #847055What about silver plating? Or…I’m sure I’ll get a few fuzzies thrown at me for even saying this…but what about platnium plating? Ive got some earrings that came from Home Shopping Network (my mom is a HSN addict) that are “technibond” and they are platinum plating over silver. They are that bright, shiny silvery color, like white gold….OR…how about white gold plated horns?! 😀 😀

The horn on my momma kirin is silver plated. I like it, but many people didn’t care for it when she hit ebay.
Looking for Blue Fawn Baby Kirin
Sanguine Oriental Test Paints, kinglet

White gold is yellow gold alloyed with other metals (often nickel and palladium) to change its color. It’s actually not crazy shiny by itself because of the alloy, so most modern white gold jewelry has been further plated with rhodium to make it look super ‘white’ (silver) in color. Rhodium is very very pricey and so white gold is more expensive in many cases. I have no idea about plating it onto pewter though!
Current prices per ounce (as of 21:30 6/2/2011, these prices change constantly)….
Gold $1,532.60
Platinum $1,809.00
Rhodium $2,275.00Volunteer mod- I'm here to help! Email me for the best response: nambroth at gmail.com
My art: featherdust.comJune 3, 2011 at 1:51 am #847148Sorry about the cut nose, I don’t know how to make the whole image show 🙁
June 3, 2011 at 1:56 am #847147June 3, 2011 at 2:17 am #847149Just the accents this time:
I admit I wouldn’t have expected it to, but the silver accents and the grey eyes are very striking against the gold, more so than the reverse IMO. I wonder how it would look on a larger sculpt.
June 3, 2011 at 1:04 pm #847196That’s fascinating (replying to Nam’s comment) because the Etsy jewelry makers/sellers I oogle seem to charge the same price for white/yellow/rose gold rings, etc. After all, 10k and 14k gold are both less than 60% gold anyway.
June 3, 2011 at 2:02 pm #847201The Labradorite lap has horns that were leafed with aluminum leaf. Real silver would have tarnished very quickly, and you can’t polish the leaf without risk of it simply rubbing off. Even those two horns was very time intensive and took at least 2 hours I think. I doubt the factory can do that!
The others are all silver paint pen, which takes far less time.

Huh! I don’t know then! I know I was looking into white gold wire for my wire wrapping at one point and it was far more expensive than yellow gold. Perhaps their white is not rhodium plated.

I hadn’t thought about tarnishing :~
But I’d be just as happy with aluminum since it gives the same look, plus, I guess that it would be less expensive than gold?
June 3, 2011 at 2:32 pm #847207What about a silver paint? Some of the copper patina dragons have the green “patina” paint on their horns (like the lap dragon and the ebay old warriors), so Im assuming the paint won’t harm the horn.
