Since I work on a medic unit I see people who can’t afford health care and use the er as a pcp. Its really sad to see the elderly who live on a fixed income and have to decide between getting meds or food. I hate the healthcare system in the us as well but its such a big money maker I don’t see them ever doing anything about it. I can’t wait to see what I’m gonna have to pay for insurance for three people once the baby is born. Every year they raise the amount of money I have to pay for insurance.
Edit: oh and I figured I would add that any kind of medical assistance is crazy. We don’t qualify because I make too much money a year. My husband gets $800 a month for disability and half of that goes to co-pays for meds alone. They don’t take into account all the medical expenses you have to pay, they just look at how much money you make and base if off of that.

the big guys still do not care. they have the money from being BOUGHT off, so if they get sick it is nothing. I’ve heard of a few names in power that have had some expensive hospital visits.
December 14, 2007 at 3:22 am #646855AMEN!!! 😛
LOL I live in a country that is supposed to be the land of the free and the home of the brave. I am not brave, I don’t even trust my neighbors. I am not free, everything costs so damn much I feel trapped in my house. If I want something extra I have to rathole money until I can afford it, and when my stash is gone, I am screwed. 😡
It’s that way all over the world…
But I also choose to be broke often. 🙄 I could get another job again, but it’s a Love/Hate thing with being a CNA…Love the older folks (even the ornery ones), hate the endless hours of crap (Literally, crap). 😆 (But, I don’t have that luxury anyway, I have to go out and do it…Soon my bills will triple. 😯 )December 14, 2007 at 6:21 am #646856Gad. The american system needs a complete overhaul. I’m so glad I live in Canada.
December 14, 2007 at 6:30 am #646857Over here health insurance is obligatory, but we can choose which company we want to go with, so there’s at least a little market competition to keep the prices of sky-rocketing.
December 14, 2007 at 7:43 pm #646858I think I need to move!!
December 14, 2007 at 7:54 pm #646859Alberta HC is $44 per month for single coverage
$88 per month for family coverage (two or more persons). That you get when you turn 18, until then you are on your parents. It does not cover prescriptions or glasses, but there is another program that will pay your health care as well, as coverage for everything else if you are low income.December 14, 2007 at 8:36 pm #646860Do you have to be born Canadian to get this??
December 14, 2007 at 9:27 pm #646861Nope my friends hubby is from New Zealand, as soon as he got his work permit it kicked in I believe, I can check on monday for sure though.
December 14, 2007 at 9:34 pm #646862That would be kewl to know since I have heard you have to be a born Canadian to get it. I’m not sure how much longer I will stay in the SF bay area since my momm and grandma are gone now. It can’t hurt to know all the options

Coverage under the Alberta
Health Care Insurance Plan is
available to all eligible Alberta
residents. Members of the
Canadian Armed Forces, the Royal
Canadian Mounted Police, and federal
penitentiary inmates are not eligible for
coverage, but their dependants who reside
in Alberta are.
An Alberta resident is defined as a
person who is:
• legally entitled to be or to remain in
Canada and makes his/her permanent
home in Alberta;
• committed to being physically present in
Alberta for at least 183 days in a 12-month
period. (Note: Alberta Health and Wellness
considers temporary absences as periods of
physical presence);
• not claiming residency or obtaining
benefits under a claim of residency in
another province, territory or country;
• any other person deemed by the
regulations to be a resident not including
a tourist, transient or visitor to Alberta.
Account holders must register their
dependants on their accounts. For the
purpose of Alberta Health Care Insurance
Plan coverage, a dependant is defined as:
• a spouse (married couples that reside
together must register together;
separated couples may register together
or separately; divorced couples must
register separately);

Are they covered elsewhere??December 14, 2007 at 11:14 pm #646865The Canadian Mounted Police are a Canada wide group. They’re covered by the Federal Government.
