Nope that’s made by someone else. At the GA Ren Faire there is another booth (Midsummer Knight’s Dream) that sells puppets more like this one, they are called woodbabies.
I have 2 woodbabies one large dragon and one hand-held dragon. They are higher in price at the RF than on the website. But I did an art-trade because there was nooooo way I could spend that kind of money. The one’s I have look a little better made than the one’s online too. The wings are glittery felt and not that foam looking stuff. The idea behind the way they are made is really simple. I thought about making a few myself but didn’t want to take anyones idea (I would do total differnt poses & animals). But now I see that there are at least 3 people making them. Wounder who was first?

Well Albert Alfaro Jr. (Imaginarium Galleries) got started making Drabits in the early 1970’s according to a brochure he gave us when we bought some puppets. The Midsummer Knight’s Dream started making Woodbabies in 1983 according to their Web site.
So in the case of Drabits vs. Woodbabies the Drabits win.

Mr. Alfaro is really nice. His whole family helps out at the shop too. His sons are growing up to be quite the salesmen!

If yours are a differnt visual style than the ones already out there, there’s always room for more, I’d think. I mean, compared to the potential market, there are not that many of them being made. Otherwise I’d have seen more of them already, given the amount of time I spend hanging around with fantasy types.

The only place I’ve really seen them are at ren faires. The woodbabies Web site has pictures of owners and their “pets” and one is from Dragon*Con, a Sci Fi/Fantasy convention. I don’t remember seeing any there when I went 10 years ago, but I didn’t spend a lot of time in the big crowds so I could have missed them easy.

I have this old dragon toy thats a bit banged up now and doesnt work too well anymore but its already programed to move its head around randomly and every now and then roar. Once I am done with this dragon, Im going to see if I can take the toy apart and and make a dragon to stick it in. If you look at garage sales you can probably find a lot of toys like that for really cheap.
Where did you find this toy?! Does it have a brand or anything? It sounds really cool.

Really? I’ve always wanted to make something that moved & I know how these are made because one of mine broke & I had to but it back together. I was just really worried about someone thinking I was taking thier idea. I would make dragons too but I would make sure they looked nothing like these. Maybe make a few like my dragonflutters. I’m working on a dragonflutter that has moveable wings!December 16, 2006 at 6:17 am #515437enchantments wrote:Really? Well, I suppose it’s possible that somebody might get upset about you making them, but unless they have a patent on the mechanism, it’s at least legally okay, and I’d think if you made them with a different design style it wouldn’t be cutting into their territory.
Then there’s the marketing thing. These guys seem to mostly do specific fairs and conventions. (Their website setup kinda suggests, to me at least, that they’re not really focused on online sales.) If you did different events, or sold them in some other way, then they’d be appealing to a different group of people.
That’s just my two cents worth, but as person who makes fantasy arts things for a living, I know I’m going to have competition, and that others are going to inevitably make things similar to my things, it’s up to me to make sure my things are unique and different and well made enough to compete. I don’t have any right to tell everybody else to not make similar things, just because it would make it easier for me.
P.S. If you know how the mechanism works, and do decide to start making them, is there any chance you’d be willing to just sell the mechanical bit, with no critter attached? Because I want to make one of my own design, but I’m not very good at mechanical construction, and I’ve no idea how the thing works anyhow.

I don’t think that making your own would be a big deal especially if you’re not selling it, and that’s what I want to do, only I don’t want to break mine to find out how. lol By the way, I got mine from A midsummer Knights Dream. ^__^
