With the USPS tracking, you in theory *can* track it once it is in Canada but only through the CanadaPost website (if they scan it) at http://www.canadapost.com (I want to say .com but it might be .ca I don’t know). Once it crosses the border USPS just says “It crossed the border”. Dumb websites.

Other then that I say go with USPS I usually get their package, but they like to forget if it’s not priority. But that might just be *my* post office.

It should do more than that. Here’s the final report on on item I shipped a few weeks ago by regular International Priority Mail to Canada, using just the tracking number on the Customs form:

    The USPS website wrote:

    Acceptance, October 14, 2008, 12:43 pm, MIDLAND, TX 79701
That’s pretty detailed information. Not as much as you’d get with UPS (which lists the place names), but decent enough to tell whether or not something went missing.

At the Canada Post Website you get the place names… Like something I got recently…. Ok, not so recently! LOL

2008/09/26 02:33 VANCOUVER, BC International item arrived in Canada and will be reviewed by Customs

Where yours just states “At Foreign Delivery Unit”. That’s what I meant…. although I could have stated it better….

Am I reading this right; it stayed in customs over two weeks? Is that normal? I guess I’ve been really lucky because I’ve never sent anything that stay in there that long.

I’d not noticed that. But yes, packages can get held up in Customs for a week or two. Presumably this one was pulled for examination. Normally it only takes a few days; maybe a week.

That’s one of the reasons it costs so much to send things by UPS. They do all the paperwork and greasing of palms ahead of time, so things are expedited through Customs. With the Post Office it’s pretty much hit and miss, waiting for cheap brokerage if I’m understanding things correctly, unless you use Express Mail. And with Express Mail you may end up paying for the speed with a broker fee and taxes that might have not been added to a Priority package.
