This won’t effect most of you but my doctor is the one that told me Medicare would not cover the shot but yesterday I decided to send my backup insurer an email and ask if they would apply it to my deductible as I had to I pay my doctor the $200 OOP before they would even give me the shot. I received an answer from them this morning and they may cover up to 80% of it so I may be getting a refund from them. YA I thought some of you might like to know because your parents are on Medicare.

Several years ago I had shingles and they were very painful. Yesterday I went to my doctor for my semi-annual check-up and he told me they now had a vaccine for them and especially since I had already had one bout it was a good idea to get the vaccine because it would prevent another one. In fact it is a good idea for anyone who had chicken pox as a child to get one. The only thing is most insurance companies will not pay for it and the out of pocket cost is $200. I am a coward about being stuck with a needle (the worlds worst baby)but I did it anyway because I to clearly remember the first round with them.

I’ll tell my Mom, she got it bad 2 years ago and was miserable. Chicken pox is no big deal, but Shingles as the second stage is really miserable from what I’ve heard.

I hope insurance companies will back it eventually.

hmm…. well I had chicken pox when I was 24… that was horrible but they now have pills to get over them faster..

the chicken pox vaccine gives you chicken pox… I’d be worried the shingles one would give you shingles… I know it would probably be weaker and you’d get over it faster… but I got the shingles 2yrs after the chicken pox and yuck that was horrible…

          and $200 😯

          that’s like 3 different bills…

Hmm, so the chicken pox vaccine is like the flu vaccine? Good to know! I had it in elementary school, don’t remember it too much. Not a complaint either! 😉 I will pass this on to those around me. But $200 is a lot! I too hope insurance companies start to cover them. Thank you for the info, darjeb!

I had shingles last fall, and I still have some pain in the place where the blisters were. But I don’t think I’d pay $200 for a vaccine against getting them again. They only occur when your immunity is low (stress or a disease that causes low immunity, like cancer). So, if you have an illness that causes low immunity, get the shot. Otherwise, just lower the amount of stress in your life (less caffeine, more exercise… should help).

I’ve never gotten shingles. Only chickenpox, and only once.

And I do have a bit of a compromised immune system. Not like someone with cancer, or anything, but worse then a normal person. 🙄

I got Shingles because I was really stressed at my job.. but it wasn’t just because of that… I bumped into something and it scratched my side in the exact spot that the chicken pox started… it was a weird combination of events that all together pretty much made a perfect condition to get them…

luckily I haven’t had them again… I think it would be worse the second time around… 😯

I know a few people that have had them more than once…

I never had chicken pox as a child. It didn’t matter how many kids that had it my mom took me to play with I never got them. My brother even had chicken pox twice. I do know that I don’t have the antibodies because they tested for them when I was pregnant with my son.

I’ve never had the chicken pox or the mumps or the measles. Which should be really interesting if we ever decide to have children… 🙄
