Thanks again guys… I’m back home after a few days at my dad’s. Feeling a little jumpy, especially at night, but I guess only time will make this better.
I’m thinking of getting a security system and window guards installed. I don’t think I’ll feel safe otherwise.
November 23, 2007 at 5:29 am #637901You know…I have 11 Min Pins and a Dachshund and we have never been robbed, or had any of our things even messed with.
Even when other houses had trouble. There is something to be said for small yappy dogs 🙂
LIH, Please don’t let this make you scared to stay on your own. Get that security system, maybe a Taser 🙂 I hear they come in designer colors now.
And if you are really still feeling upset, buy a gun and go to a firing range and learn to use it. I can tell you, when my husband is out of town, the .357 is on the dresser and I am comfortable using it.
Hugs and hope things get better for you!
November 23, 2007 at 5:38 am #637902Problem Keschete for LIH is she lives in Canada Like I do, and unless she wants to do things Illegally there’s way too many hoops to jump through to obtain, own, and posses a gun. Far less be allowed to fire it. And I’ve been informed that Crossbows also fall under the exact same category as Guns so there goes my fun 🙁
November 23, 2007 at 10:50 am #637903There are lots of good things to be said for small, yappy dogs, keschete. They are just not for me…repetitive sharp noises make my head fly off. 😉 😆
November 23, 2007 at 10:52 am #637904littleironhorse do whatever you have to do…you have to feel safe in your own home!
November 23, 2007 at 3:06 pm #637905Just make sure your door is locked all the time. If it’s an isolated incident, which it sounds like, you don’t have any reason to worry about a repeat. Your dog is there to alert you too.
We had a girl come to our house one night last year. She had a big scratch on her neck that was bleeding, and she looked like she had been struggling with someone — you know, hair messed up, clothes in disarray. Anyway, she asked if she could use our phone to call her brother to pick her up. She’d been on a date and the guy tried to kidnap and rape her. She got away, but not before he punched her a few times. I let her use the phone. Then there was a guy at our door and I thought, “Uh oh. What if he followed her here?” So I made my husband (6’4″, 200+ lbs, lots of hair and a beard) open the door. It turns out that this guy had seen the whole thing and he was on his cell phone, calling 911. He came here to make sure she was okay. The cops came and took her statement and the brother took her home. I don’t know if they caught the guy or not, but I’m sure they probably did. He was someone she worked with, so they could get lots of info about him.
Anyway, nothing like that had happened before. Nothing has happened since. I’m glad I let her in; it may have saved her life. But I’m not going to move because of it. I’m not going to worry every night about the guy coming here for revenge for helping her. It was an isolated event. It’s not that kind of neighborhood.
The point is: don’t worry so much about being safe that you move over this. Just keep your doors locked when you’re inside, and make sure you pay attention to what your dog gets upset about. Those things should protect you enough.

I didn’t think about Canadian law being different. How about Tasers? Can you all own those?
I would hate to not be allowed to own a gun for personal protection…but in the US that is part of our Constitution.
Whole point LIH, don’t let anyone make you scared to live in your home….and I agree with Emerald, it is probably just an isolated incident.
November 23, 2007 at 8:21 pm #637907Nope, no tasers, no mace either (technically) but you can carry pepper spray. My father got me some, he works for Canada Customs as a border guard.
November 23, 2007 at 9:41 pm #637908I’m sure it was an isolated incident as well, I’ve lived at that address for the last 8-9 years and nothing ever happened. I’m just a little jumpy now but I’m sure I’ll settle down in a little while.
As far as protection is concerned, I used to be in the cadets where I learned to use a gun, although I’m more comfortable with a rifle, but I don’t own one. And I think I would actually feel safer with a can of pepper spray than with a gun. I don’t know if I could actually get the nerve up to fire at someone and any hesitation might let them get it away from me and then where would I be?
With pepper spray, no hesitation, and let me tell you that would stop him in his tracks! The one that I have shoots a cone of dense mist to a distance of 8-10 feet, and since the cone widens, there is no risk of missing the target.
Anyway, I’m sure I’ll be fine. It was just a shock!

Hairspray works, get it in the eyes and it’ll give you enough time to run.
Dogs are great, we had a cocker who would bark. Everyone around us was robbed one year. No one came near our house. The dangerous guys who aren’t afraid of dogs are the problem.
One of my friends from high school got drunk one night. He went to someones house, she left the door unlocked I guess. Well, he let himself in and sat down next to the lady in that house and just cuddled up to her until the police came. At least he was friendly….
I know that even in the best neigbourhoods always lock your door.
