😯 Okay, it’s currently 2:58 AM, I just finished talking to the police and I know I will not sleep a wink tonight.

About 2 hours ago I was reading a good book and hadn’t gotten to bed yet when my dog started barking hysterically. I tried to shut her up while I went to investigate what had her so excited, I thought there must have been a skunk, racoon or stray dog in the yard. So I peer through the blinds and I see a strange man lying on his back on my back porch. At first glance he doesn’t seem injured but I can’t really tell, his eyes are open and he’s shaking his head from side to side. Still, I call 911 and explain what’s happened and they say they’re going to send an ambulance.

At this point I’m sligtly alarmed, but not overly so.

Then after a few tries the guy manages to get himself up and I can see that he’s either drunk or on drugs, and he starts screaming and kicking at my door. So I call 911 again and tell them that the guy is up and getting violent. They tell me that they’re sending a police car right away.

While all this was going on, I suddenly remembered that I hadn’t locked my back door that night (I usually only lock it as I’m going to bed and I hadn’t been to bed yet). I didn’t dare to go lock it while the guy was there because I thought that if he saw me trying to get it locked he might have realised it wasn’t yet and get in before I got a chance to do it.

So the guy is kicking and screaming, and I’m huddled in the living room holding on to my dog’s collar with one hand and with a small mace spray bottle in the other hand.

About 10 minutes later the kicking and screaming stops, another 10 minutes later a policeman knocks on my door and tells me that they arrested the guy, that he was in fact drunk and maybe on drugs and that he had been doing his little show at several houses in the neighbourhood, even trying to get into some of the houses.

I guess I’m just lucky that he only kicked at my door and didn’t actually try to open it. 😯

Holy crap! I am so glad you are safe! I am also glad you had at least a dog and some mace. I think I would have grabbed a kitchen knife, too, just to be safe πŸ˜† Whew! I think once the adrenaline wears off you will konk out. I have had a drunk girl come into my house once. The dogs just licked her πŸ™„ She was so out of it, but she was not violent like this guy. I hate living alone sometimes. Maybe a friend could come over, though if it is that late, I doubt they would appreciate the call.

OMG, LIH!!! I had chills going up and down my spine as I read your post!!! 😯 Thank goodness your dog alerted you!!! How are you today?? πŸ˜•

Gee whiz! Yikes! So sorry for such a terrifying event for you! Glad your dog was on point and that you came through it OK. I gotta tell you, if I was one of your local friends and you called me at any hour with this kind of situation, Id SOOO be over to your place to stay with you till you felt better. Been there and done that for friends (as they have for me too)! What are friends for if you cant call on them during times of horrendous stress and fear such as this. But why is it not many of us actually take friends up on such offers??? I always mean it when I say it and in times, have been hurt when a friend has been suffering AND in need, yet not called when they know my personality. Perplexing. But then Im a hypocrite as I dont like to call in times of my own need either. Oxymoron 😳

Im so relieved that nothing bad (other than panic- which Im not making light of especially as I suffer a panic disorder- though oddly enough, not in normal times of panic πŸ˜• ) came of the night. You deserve a nice meal out and the dog deserve some Scooby snacks!

Wow! My heartbeat skyrocketed while I was reading this. I am so incredibly happy that nothing happened to you! I hope you do try to get some sleep. It will help your mind to process it! πŸ˜‰

I’m so glad you have a dog; they’re great alarms that you can hug!

I hope you slept in real late this morning!

You know how in times of stress the strangest ideas come through your head? I did pick up a knife and then I kept thinking: what if he takes it away from me and attacks me?

And I didn’t even think to call a friend (or my brother who lives only a couple of streets over), although as PT said, I have absolutely no doubt that they would have come right away and would not have been mad at me, but it just didn’t occur to me. I guess my thinking sort of short-circuited.

I’m feeling a lot better this morning. Things feel sort of surreal in the light of day. And yes! Thanks goodness for dogs!!!

You can say that again! πŸ™‚ Why does hugging a dog make us feel so much better I wonder?

I did eventually manage to get about 3 hours of sleep, still holding on to my dog with one hand and the mace with the other one, and having place the cordless phone right next my pillow πŸ˜†

Awkward, but it was the only way I was going to get any sleep. I woke up about an hour ago and thought about staying in bed, but I figured if I fell back asleep and got up late, I wouldn’t be able to sleep tonight, so I got up.

Good grief, that’s very scary! 😯 I’m glad that everything turned out OK. I hope that you’re keeping your doors locked at all times now.

You must be tired after only 3 hours of sleep. Hopefully you can take a nap during the day. πŸ™‚

You know, this is the third time my dog has warned me like this?

The other 2 times were while I was walking her. The first time it happened, she was about two years old, were walking down the street and there were two men walking toward us from the opposite direction. Suddenly as the men were coming closer she started stalking (you know what I mean, the slow, deliberate, staring walk) and growling (the serious hackles raised, bared teeth growling, not the you’re annoying me, let go of my tail, half-hearted complaint). I was so startled, I just grabbed on to her collar and kept walking. Meanwhile the two men cut across the street and got away.

The second time was a couple of years later and was pretty much a repeat of the first except there was only one man that time.

At some point I mentionned this behaviour to my father and how startled I had been. I mean, my dog is the friendliest dog I know, she loves everyone! She goes up to strangers to be petted all the time! He said if she did something like this again not to try and hold her back, let her be as threatening as she wanted to be. That although I hadn’t gotten a weird feeling from those men, she had and her senses were much keener than my own.

HA! You better believe it!!! Sometimes I so hate living in the city!

Yeah, I’m pretty much running on fumes at this point, I probably will try and take a nap in the afternoon, I just don’t want to screw up my sleeping patterns.

Thanks again for the concern guys. Although I am tired, I am also feeling much better now πŸ˜€
