I have a mother unicorn whose horn had broken off. Susie was kind enough to send me a replacement horn however i have a small dilemma. The original horns base is still logged in the hole and i have no idea how to get it out so that i can insert the new horn. Any suggestions? In the photo you can see the remaining part from the old horn.

December 16, 2015 at 1:24 am #938257You can start with a few drops of acetone right into the hole to start dissolving the glue, then see if the metal part can be wiggled out.
Read my books! Volume 1 and 2 of A Dragon Medley are available now.

Thanks Etruscan!
Basically what dragonmedly said. I usually use sharp pick tools like those for clay sculpting, and very carefully scrape away the epoxy around the horn stub. Every once in a while I wiggle the horn and check the movement. Be careful with the acetone though, I believe it can eat the gypsum if too much is in there. If your not using the old horn, since susie sent you a new one, if you would like to send the old one to me, my neighbor and I can make a new tang for the broken one. We found a way to drill into the base carefully them and set a new tang/core in them.
If there is anything I can help you with feel free to pm, ill see if I can find the pics from the last unicorn I fixed.

I made my own tool that proved to be very effective! I took a short sewing needle and wedged it into the base of a hobby knife instead of a blade. That way I could screw the needle in nice and tight to make a very precise and sharp digging tool. It gave a fantastic amount of leverage from the handle and I could efficiently dig out the glue/horn stub with the needle tip. Since the needle is so small it left no damage to the surrounding area. With a lot of patience I was able to dig/loosen the horn stub and remove it. I am definitely keeping that tool for repairs like this in the future. Hope this helps. 🙂
May 19, 2019 at 5:47 am #1567689I’m glad for this thread…though I hate the reason why. Lyrebird’s horn broke in the move.

I’m gonna sound SUPER old but how do everyone do those streaming videos now without using an actual computer… is it just by using your phone or something on Facebook? My laptop is ANCIENT, but runs on Windows 10. (poorly I might ad) I used to have a web cam but that thing isn’t even compatible with my current Windows software now because it force updated me and now everything runs like complete garbage. Is there a way to stream a video with just a smartphone now and have it save?
