I have 2 unicorns I want repainted and I figured maybe I could do it myself . But I need something that removes the paint and does not hurt the sculpt it’s self . And natural too if it can be .
If it’s only online I probably can’t get it .The reason for doing this is because Blank PYO unicorns are hard to find .
September 16, 2011 at 6:09 pm #856744Honestly, I find it is much easier to re-prime them and just repaint them WITHOUT removing the paint. I haven’t found anything that will not also harm the gypsum, at least not while also removing ALL of the paint safely instead of just chunks which looks even worse once repainted.

September 16, 2011 at 11:54 pm #856781If the paint hasn’t been sealed, I know from personal experience that running hot water and a toothbrush removes paint without hurting the gypsum.

Wouldn’t this take away from the sculpture’s fine details?

Indeed, sometimes it does. That’s one of the drawbacks, but if you can’t get the paint off without harming the gypsum, the end result is MUCH worse. I speak from experiences…..sad sad experience

Dreamscape, Orion, Poison Dart, Fireberry, Spangler + Tigerberry DragonsSeptember 17, 2011 at 7:09 pm #856867Huh. I’ve stripped multiple pieces and they’ve never appeared harmed to me. What are you guys using? o_O;
September 17, 2011 at 8:50 pm #856889my experience with removing paint is that its a huge hassle, a pain, time consuming, and almost impossible to get paint out of some crevaces in some sculptures (not talking about PYOs here).
Just remember that once you start stripping a piece – you MUST finish or it will look a ton worse than a little dulled detail – painting over half stripped sculpts makes for some very obvious lines, like peeling skin 🙁 its not pretty!

I’ll second that. I go over the pieces I strip with a fine-toothed comb. I use a dental tool to get out any tiny little bits in the cracks that may have been left behind…and after I basecoat it, I go over it again, because some things just don’t show up until you get some paint on them.
September 17, 2011 at 11:12 pm #856900I tried water and dish soap . Got some off . Problem more then one layer on them .
September 18, 2011 at 12:34 am #856902If you have started pulling paint off, you may as well just strip it.
I think Kitsunelady actually recommended this product and it’s the only thing I’ve ever used on Windstones – it’s called “Citrustrip” and you can get it at WalMart for about $10. It’s a gel that you cake onto the piece for a few hours (directions are on the package and easy to follow) and then you just start peeling and scrubbing off the paint. It smells like citrus but I’d still recommend wearing something on your face/body because it does have a strong smell and will easily fleck off onto stuff when you’re scrubbing the piece.
I’ve used it on 2 Windstones before and it has been very gentle on both of them! Even though it takes a bit of work to get the paint off, I think you’ll be happy with the results. Sometimes it leaves a slight orange discoloration on the piece but it’s not anything that will affect the sculpt in the long run 🙂

September 18, 2011 at 2:26 pm #856949Well, you certainly need safety glasses, but it doesn’t have any dangerous fumes. They recommend gloves, but it’s not going to burn you like a conventional stripper. =)
September 18, 2011 at 2:51 pm #856951Gives a better grip on Windstone . They can be slippery . And you do not want to drop them .
September 18, 2011 at 4:54 pm #856965This is all great advice! Thank you everyone for helping.
