      I have 2 unicorns I want repainted and I figured maybe I could do it myself . But I need something that removes the paint and does not hurt the sculpt it’s self . And natural too if it can be .
      If it’s only online I probably can’t get it .

      The reason for doing this is because Blank PYO unicorns are hard to find .

        Honestly, I find it is much easier to re-prime them and just repaint them WITHOUT removing the paint. I haven’t found anything that will not also harm the gypsum, at least not while also removing ALL of the paint safely instead of just chunks which looks even worse once repainted.

          That sounds much easier to do . Just have to be light on the primer to protect the detail .

            If the paint hasn’t been sealed, I know from personal experience that running hot water and a toothbrush removes paint without hurting the gypsum.

              Wouldn’t this take away from the sculpture’s fine details?

                Indeed, sometimes it does. That’s one of the drawbacks, but if you can’t get the paint off without harming the gypsum, the end result is MUCH worse. I speak from experiences…..sad sad experience

                  Huh. I’ve stripped multiple pieces and they’ve never appeared harmed to me. What are you guys using? o_O;

                  my experience with removing paint is that its a huge hassle, a pain, time consuming, and almost impossible to get paint out of some crevaces in some sculptures (not talking about PYOs here).

                  Just remember that once you start stripping a piece – you MUST finish or it will look a ton worse than a little dulled detail – painting over half stripped sculpts makes for some very obvious lines, like peeling skin 🙁 its not pretty!

                    I’ll second that. I go over the pieces I strip with a fine-toothed comb. I use a dental tool to get out any tiny little bits in the cracks that may have been left behind…and after I basecoat it, I go over it again, because some things just don’t show up until you get some paint on them.

                      I tried water and dish soap . Got some off . Problem more then one layer on them .

                      If you have started pulling paint off, you may as well just strip it.

                      I think Kitsunelady actually recommended this product and it’s the only thing I’ve ever used on Windstones – it’s called “Citrustrip” and you can get it at WalMart for about $10. It’s a gel that you cake onto the piece for a few hours (directions are on the package and easy to follow) and then you just start peeling and scrubbing off the paint. It smells like citrus but I’d still recommend wearing something on your face/body because it does have a strong smell and will easily fleck off onto stuff when you’re scrubbing the piece.

                      I’ve used it on 2 Windstones before and it has been very gentle on both of them! Even though it takes a bit of work to get the paint off, I think you’ll be happy with the results. Sometimes it leaves a slight orange discoloration on the piece but it’s not anything that will affect the sculpt in the long run 🙂

                        Thanks I’ve seen it but wasn’t sure if it was safe . I’ll get some with rubber gloves and face mask . LOL . Well at least they can be reborn that way . And unicorns are hard to come by .

                          Well, you certainly need safety glasses, but it doesn’t have any dangerous fumes. They recommend gloves, but it’s not going to burn you like a conventional stripper. =)

                            Gives a better grip on Windstone . They can be slippery . And you do not want to drop them .
