XD Well the eyes can look yellow from a camera flash or a bright light if it’s close enough to one so it’s easy to make that mistake… red though? I dunno. Maybe he had a headache from trying too hard to hatch. 😆
A headache from butting his head against the egg to hatch

That’s what egg teeth are for 😉

I have NEVER heard of egg teeth??
http://dragcave.ath.cx/user/36064March 14, 2008 at 12:00 am #679208When birds and reptiles are in the egg they have a tooth at the tip of their beak. It helps them break the shell of their egg.
March 14, 2008 at 12:02 am #679209Do they lose it after wards?
http://dragcave.ath.cx/user/36064March 14, 2008 at 12:03 am #679210Yup.

Birds and reptiles have them at birth. Some fall off after birth (eventually) while others are absorbed by the body. They help the little guys break open the egg. It’s a little growth on the upper mandible of a bird or on the mouth of a reptile. You can just google egg tooth and see some examples of them. They are very tiny, but effective. They are thought to be a recent evolutionary development (they aren’t found in fossils from the earliest birds, even those in eggs… they may have used sharp claws instead?). 🙂
EDIT: Hehe… Stephanie beat me to responding 😉
March 14, 2008 at 12:13 am #679212That is very interesting. I wonder how the older animals liek snakes got hatched if they did not have these
http://dragcave.ath.cx/user/36064March 14, 2008 at 4:58 am #679213Their shell probably weren’t as thick. At least, that’s what I think. 😆
March 14, 2008 at 5:19 am #679214Snake and lizard eggs tend to be leathery rather than hard, so it’s not quite as difficult for them. For birds, the egg tooth does make it easier for them to hack their way out of that shell, but most of the work is actually done by the bird striking its beak against the shell. The egg tooth just gives it a tiny point to focus that force into. Considering how little room the chick has to move inside that shell, and it’s got its head stuffed underneath its wing, and has to actually roll over inside the egg in order to cut a line in the shell so it can push the top off and hatch . . . it’s a miracle they hatch at all! 😆
March 21, 2008 at 2:12 am #679215I went to that store and saw that hatchling. As far as I can tell he is a red fire color, and he definitely has red eyes. Here are some poor pictures from my camera phone – I didn’t bring my camera cable.
What do you think?
March 21, 2008 at 2:16 am #679216Looks like an ‘oops’ to me! You might want to post your photos in the Ask Melody forum, just so she’s aware that there is (at least one) goof on a red fire hatcher out there!
