Forever seeking: Blackwatch the raffle Old Warrior, Jennifer Miller's pieces, and GB Baby unis!
August 27, 2008 at 10:36 pm #730123Hello Melody! The Rainbow Glitter sun dragon you have up on Ebay now is gorgeous! I couldn’t help but draw parallels between that paint scheme and the scales of the Sunbeam Snake (Xenopeltis unicolor). I keep snakes and have wanted one or two of these for a long time, mostly because of those gorgeous scales! For the unfamiliar, a google image search will turn up some good pics of them.
My question is, did this critter inspire the Rainbow Glitter scheme, or is it just a happy coincidence? Either way, it looks great on those big-scaled dragons.

I did notice the resemblance of the paint to my snake right after she has shed her skin. Though she is only a lowly ratsnake, she has a little of the same rainbow glitter as the special paint.
I love those iridescent snakes. Do you know what sort of temperament they have? They aren’t commonly kept as pets are they?August 28, 2008 at 6:56 am #730126I wish sunbeams were more common as pets! Talk about lowly snakes yourself, mine are all garter snakes. They are lovely and have such neat personalities though, I don’t mind that they’re not exotic. ‘Sunbeam snake’ actually serves as a common name for two species, which look very similar. Xenopeltis unicolor hails from southeast Asia, while Loxocemeus bicolor is from Central America, and is also called the New World Python. Both are burrowing snakes and like humid conditions. Both aren’t very common in the pet trade, although Xenopeltis are easier to find. Unfortunately most of them are imported from the wild, so they are easily stressed, and often come in with parasites. I’ve heard many stories of people making great pets out of them though. Every once and a while I’ve found captive bred babies, there’s even a bloodline of albino sunbeams out there! I’ve heard they’re quite docile except when feeding, when they turn pretty voracious, hehe.
Out of curiosity, what type of ratsnake do you have? Just like garters there are a lot of different species out there!

August 28, 2008 at 4:50 pm #730127I like boa constrictors myself. I’ll have to research these snakes you and Melody are talking about, Zelda. 😉

She was originally from an animal shelter, so her history is lost. She is one of the domesticated morphs,a lovely maroon red in color. I love these snakes, they are a nice size, not too small, not too large, fairly docile to handle and they have a calm temperament. She also doesn’t smell too bad if you keep her house clean. I love garter snakes, but they have a strong odor.
August 29, 2008 at 1:58 am #730129I had a Florida Garter ? I think, and he was black with aqua and teal racing stripes. Didn’t smell too bad, but he sure loved to eat toads and goldfish 😯

Do you have photos? She almost sounds like a bloodred cornsnake.

My experience with garters crosses a few species, although I only have Plains at the moment. I’ve found that they only really get stinky if they a) musk, since that’s their main defense or b), if you feed them live fish and worms for food. Mine eat defrosted trout pieces and sometimes pinky mice. It’s more convenient for me to keep than live food, and they don’t smell at all! Plus I use corncob material for their bedding, so it smells more like corn than anything else, hah! I can understand your desire for a pet that’s not too big and has a good attitude though.
I agree with Rusti, please post a picture! We might be able to ID her for you. Great to know there are other herp keepers on the list!
