That is an awesome display unit.

I could use a few of those in my store, but I’d not even be able to make the down payment on one of those babies. *sigh*

I have a cherry corner curio, but do not put any of my Windstones in there. I could put my curlies and Poads in there, but I am mostly afraid of our dog rather than the glass shelves. We have a very young playful dog, who loves to run circles in our dining room with her bone. The bone has flown out of her mouth a few times, and hit near my curio. I am just waiting for it to crash through the door one of thses days… or even her knock it over! As soon as I can get out of my apartment and into a house…. I will have sturdy shelving put in just for my Windstones. And I’m moving my curio to a room where she will not be running! 😆

Did you have to assemble your curio? In your instructions it should tell you how much weight the shelves can hold. Mine is mostly glass and the shelves only hold 5kgs. About 11 lbs.

I can’t put much in there. My OW is in a case by itself. My heavier pieces are on the wooden bottom, and the middle shelf. The middle shelf has wood around the glass shelf.

The worst part of my curio is the door. It’s on the side! It’s flimsy because of that. (I didn’t know that when I got it, if I knew I wouldn’t have bought it.)

no, the only thing I had to do was put the selves in. In the middle of the curio it has like a wooden border (?) that holds up that shelve instead of the pins, so i could probably put the emp or ow on that one. My curio has glass doors on both sides too..it’s a pain to get in and out of cuz the only space I had room for it was in the corner of the den…small apartment, 😆

It depends on a lot of factors like many have said. I have glass shelves (see below).

They are tempered glass and relatively square. I didn’t feel comfortable putting my large wizard with dragons on the same shelf, but several males and females didn’t seem to hurt.

It will also depend on if you have more rectangular shelves and how they are held in place. Mine are supported from underneath by rubber stoppers, but if yours are held in place with pins that hold the glass on the edge then I would recommend less weight.

Also, the earthquake putty DM recommended works well, especially for smaller Windstones that have a tendency to get knocked over when dusting. Just don’t use the clear gel – it can be messy.

If you need links to order it on the internet, let me know.

Yeah my shelves are more rectangular, but I think what holds them up sound a lot like yours…although I’m not sure if they are rubber. Might be. But the glass looks to be as thick as yours are. So I’m guessing it will be safe for a few on one shelf like yours are. Nice display by the way!!

I’m thinking about putting all my Windstone dragons in there…but I’m not sure about the weight.

Most curios are designed to hold knick-knacks, not bricks. The glass is likely to be annealed glass, which is weak compared to tempered glass (some curios have annealed glass shelving, and tempered glass doors). You could try wrapping an actual brick in cloth and carefully placing it on a shelf while you look to see if the shelf sags under the weight. If it doesn’t sag at all, you are probably OK. I’d expect it to sag, though.

Assuming the brackets are strong enough (take the glass out and try pushing down on a bracket to see if it is likely to bend under any serious weight), the best thing to do is go to a glass supplier and buy thicker shelving, or shelving made of tougher glass. Ask for their advice – they’ll know what you need.

I have no idea of the cost of this, though – the glass shelves I have sag under their own weight, so I just keep knick-knacks on them and use wooden shelving for Windstones.

I don’t have a clue what kind of glass is used in this thing. The only thing I can tell is that the doors a much thinner than the actual shelves. I don’t know how much it was (got it as an b-day present from the in-laws) if that could give me a better estimate of what type of glass is used. One was broken upon arrival though!
I have a lot of things crammed in there right now but these dragons don’t weigh that much at all so I’m able to fit about 6 of them on one shelf. All of my windstones are on wooden shelves right now.

Actually, after we had the discussion, I went and weighed my emp! He’s 7 pounds (that’s heavier than my dog!).

My cats are heavier than your emp! (15 and 18 lbs.) 😆

All my Windstones are on wood shelves. I also collect Eskimo/Native American soapstone carvings. Some of them were displayed on glass shelves. The top shelf broke and the domino effect took over. I lost about half my collection. No more glass shelves for me.

A lot of it depends on how long the shelves are, how they are supported, and if they are tempered glass. And what you are putting on it. I just won’t take the chance again.

these shelves are not that long. only, I’d say about a foot and a half I guess. I’m still not sure what kind of glass it is though.

If you have the opportunity, watch for a Store Closing sale at a Hallmark or a jewelry store that sells porcelain figures: the display units are really nice and while NOT cheap, better than buying one new. I was able to snag a tall, glass-walled, glass-shelved John Hines Studio display unit; the glass shelves are VERY thick and support multiple Windstones without bending. I really like it, although I keep the heaviest pieces on the wooden bottom. But the nameless glass display I also bought bends if you look at it cross-eyed, so it holds Breyers instead. 😛

My big curio cabinet shelves are glass, but supported on three sides, so I figure they are reasonably safe, though I don’t plan to put really heavy pieces on them, anything with weight will be on the bottom shelf, which is wood.

My smaller curio holds the smaller pieces, my unicorns, individual dragons and PYOs…they aren’t too heavy, and since the side door on is is tiny, there is only so many sculpts I can really get inside it anyhow.

During store closing sales they get rid of the display units as well? I didn’t know that, but sounds like a good idea. I’ll keep my eye open, there are tons of hallmarks around here and lots of family owned jewelry
          stores too.
Do you think the lap and scratcher dragons are too heavy for the glass shelves kyrin??

I don’t know, how are they supported?? Did you already mention that? Not sure.

If they are supported on three sides, like mine are, I would consider it an acceptable risk to put 2 on a shelf, making sure part of the dragon rested on the solid support edge a bit to help reduce the amount of weight on the glass itself.

If the glass is supported by little pegs, no. Because the weight combined with the reverse pressure from the little supports would influence the glass to flex, and since glass doesn’t flex well. *shudder*

Also, you’re asking me? I’m the one who fixes these things when they get broken, remember! Isn’t it a conflict of interest? LOL!

But seriously, if you don’t feel it is safe, then don’t do it. I think the idea of putting something of similar weight on the shelf for a bit to test how it holds up is a good idea, then you will know for sure without risking your Windstones.

I’m thinking my shelves are being held up by those little peg things at all four corners. safe? not safe? arrrrg. I just don’t know. I really want to put them in there to give them a bit more protection. Plus I think they will look very pretty in the curio’s light. Doh, this is such a pain!! choices like this drive me nuts in case no one has noticed yet. 😉 😆

Thanks! My shelves are actually the end piece to a 3 piece set of a entertainment console. (I only bought the one pair of shelves). They are made to hold like VCRs and DVD players, etc.

Your unit probably is safe. One way you can test it is if you have a couple of 1-2 lb bags of rice or beans from the store and put them on there to see if the glass sags at all (like Dave mentioned). Even if the glass will hold you need to make sure the glass holders/bracket will as well.
