So I’m planning on taking everything out of my curio this weekend to give it a good dusting and I’m thinking about putting all my Windstone dragons in there…but I’m not sure about the weight. It’s a cherry (?) curio with glass shelves. Do you guys/girls think it will hold them?? I’m just paranoid about putting them all in there…clearly I’d have to spread them out a bit but I’m just not sure! 😕 Is it safe? Help me out here! 😆

it would all depend on how it’s built

Some here say they will NEVER have glass shelves. I LOVE my curio’s and they have a glass slide door, glass sides and glass shelves. I did not put one of the shelves in each due to the height of the Emperor’s though. The Emperors are the heaviest and on the bottom shelf which is actually wood. I also secured EVERYTHING I put in it and the shelves themselves with earthquake putty so nothing will budge or be easy to remove

I have a corner curio with all my small pieces curls, fledgies, coiled, hoofers, orientals on the bottom.

All my heavy pieces, like OW are on wood shelves.

Silly internet..(sorry having issues today)…Since I have glass shelves in the curio should I keep my larger dragons ( OW and EMP ) out of the curio and just put the others in? They are all currently on wooden book shelves but my cat is loosing a lot of weight and he’s starting to get a bit bolder. 🙂
I’m just worried that he may knock them down cuz he’s still rather fat. That and the dust in this place seems to have multiplied somehow…I dust them constantly and it’s never enough. I’m concerned even putting the male and mother dragons in there cuz the things that hold the shelves up are these small silly looking plastic things I guess. They look kind of like the ones you can see in pictures that you guys/girls post of your collections…but I’m just worried about them that’s all.
      DM, earthquake putty??

Yep we have discussed it here before. It looks like silly putty and at least the ones I got where in a flat package and you just break off a piece apply it to the Windstone or other things and press it on the shelf and it will not move or leave reaidue on the collectible. I think I got 4 packs for under $20. I got mine at Home Depot they had it in the earthquake section and by teh registers.
You also have to remember I live in Earthquake counrty. I’m not sure if all Home Depots will have it.
It’s the stuff museums actually use for artifacts so they do nto get damages. I think they also call it Museum Putty. I LOVE it. It’s a cheap insurance policy

It surely sounds perfect for living in earthquake country. Nothing like that happens here…in fact nothing happens here, so I don’t think I’ll be needing any of it. Would you recommend or do you know of how to maybe reinforce the things that hold up the shelves? 😆 I know it sounds silly but I’m just afraid of them falling on each other.

Aside from what’s been said, yes, you should definatly keep out the Emperor (unless you can put him on the bottom, wooden shelf) What I try to do with new shelves is to find things similar in weight to whatever Windstones I’m going to put up….and round up some of their weights..

          Emp and rising spectral-15lbs
          OW- 12lbs
          Male/mother/sitting spectral/griffins-9lbs each
Young and fledge-5 (not really that much, probably 2lbs, but to be on the safe side)
          lap-10lbs

and estimate “Hmm…I can FIT 3 dragons on there…could this shelf hold 30-40lbs?” and find something that heavy and place it on the shelf first and I let it sit over night or maybe a whole day. If it lasts, its probably safe.

I LOVE the look of glass shelves, but I do NOT trust them!

It would also depend on the thickness of the glass. Some curios have thick glass. Put heavier items near the side where the support is, or at the bottom. But test your shelves, make sure that they are solid and do not move. Test the pins(?) holding your shelves too, sometimes they can be loose. 😉

As others have said, be careful of putting heavy pieces on glass shelves. If the top or middles shelf gives, you will have a domino effect. I have some Windstones on the solid bottom shelves of my curio, but when my new shelves are finished, I am moving them out.

Did you have to assemble your curio? In your instructions it should tell you how much weight the shelves can hold. Mine is mostly glass and the shelves only hold 5kgs. About 11 lbs.

I can’t put much in there. My OW is in a case by itself. My heavier pieces are on the wooden bottom, and the middle shelf. The middle shelf has wood around the glass shelf.

The worst part of my curio is the door. It’s on the side! It’s flimsy because of that. (I didn’t know that when I got it, if I knew I wouldn’t have bought it.)

I have the IKEA glass curio. The shelves can take up to almost 12 pounds. I have one emperor on a glass shelf, but that’s it. The others are on wood shelves.

Actually, after we had the discussion, I went and weighed my emp! He’s 7 pounds (that’s heavier than my dog!).

Read my books! Volume 1 and 2 of A Dragon Medley are available now.

For some of my winstones I’ve started using a refurbished china cabinet, I keep books underneath in the drawers and windstones up top, it’s really sturdy and I only paid $50 for it. It’s all wood shelving, then again we did have to fix it’s scratches, but now it’s really nice. 🙂

It depends on a lot of factors like many have said. I have glass shelves (see below).

They are tempered glass and relatively square. I didn’t feel comfortable putting my large wizard with dragons on the same shelf, but several males and females didn’t seem to hurt.

It will also depend on if you have more rectangular shelves and how they are held in place. Mine are supported from underneath by rubber stoppers, but if yours are held in place with pins that hold the glass on the edge then I would recommend less weight.

Also, the earthquake putty DM recommended works well, especially for smaller Windstones that have a tendency to get knocked over when dusting. Just don’t use the clear gel – it can be messy.

If you need links to order it on the internet, let me know.

Most curios are designed to hold knick-knacks, not bricks. The glass is likely to be annealed glass, which is weak compared to tempered glass (some curios have annealed glass shelving, and tempered glass doors). You could try wrapping an actual brick in cloth and carefully placing it on a shelf while you look to see if the shelf sags under the weight. If it doesn’t sag at all, you are probably OK. I’d expect it to sag, though.

Assuming the brackets are strong enough (take the glass out and try pushing down on a bracket to see if it is likely to bend under any serious weight), the best thing to do is go to a glass supplier and buy thicker shelving, or shelving made of tougher glass. Ask for their advice – they’ll know what you need.

I have no idea of the cost of this, though – the glass shelves I have sag under their own weight, so I just keep knick-knacks on them and use wooden shelving for Windstones.
